Cougars Equalize Late on Senior Day, Draw Utah

PULLMAN, Wash. – The Washington State women's soccer team (9-5-2, 2-4-2) tied the Utah Utes (5-6-6, 1-4-3), 1-1, Sunday afternoon at Lower Soccer Field. WSU freshman Reagan Kotschau scored the Cougars' equalizing goal with less than 10 minutes to play to give Wazzu the tie on Senior Day.

Washington State controlled the flow of the match throughout, putting up 22 total shots, 11 in each half, with eight opportunities on frame. The Utes finished with just eight shots and two shots on target. Cougar senior Aniah Cutler had the first chance on target in the 15th minute, when she beat her defender down the right flank. Cutler lined up a powerful shot from a tight angle, forcing the keeper to parry the shot away.

Fellow Cougar senior Margie Detrizio had a similar opportunity in the 31st minute, using her speed to create space for the shot. Detrizio blasted the shot right at the Utes' keeper, who handled the fastball and kept things level through the first half.

Returning from the locker room, the Cougs looked poised to find the opener, before Utah exploited a counter-attack in the 53rd minute and found the opening goal. Uta's Katie O'Kane finished with a low strike through traffic that beat WSU keeper Nadia Cooper to the ground.

WSU pressed forward, looking for the equalizer. Kotschau had a pair of headers early in the second half, finding space in the area to win aerial duels. In the 66th minute, Kotschau played a cross in for Bri McReynolds who headed the look on frame, but could not get the pace to finish.

The roles of Kotschau and McReynolds would reverse in the 82nd minute when senior Bryanan Pizarro played a through ball for McReynolds to the end line. McReynolds delivered a floating cross into the area where Kotschau met it in the air and finished the equalizer for her third goal of the season.

Kotschau became the fourth Cougar with three goals this season. The match concluded Washington State's home game slate, and the Cougars will conclude Pac-12 play on the road. Next week, WSU travels to Corvallis to face Oregon State, Thursday, Oct. 26 at 7 p.m.
