PULLMAN, Wash. — Washington State true freshman sprinter Louie Hinchliffe will make his national championships debut this week as he opens the 2023 NCAA Championships Wednesday night in the national semifinal round of the men's 100-meter dash. Hinchliffe, who tied the Washington State program record at the NCAA West Preliminary in the 100m (10.17) to qualify for this year's championships, will compete in the first of three semifinal heats Wednesday beginning at 5:46 p.m. (PST) from Austin, Texas.
Meet Info:
- Venue: Mike A Meyers Stadium | Austin, Texas
- Dates: June 7-10, 2023
- Heat Sheets/Start Lists
While making his collegiate outdoor debut at Mike A Meyers Stadium, the same venue as this year's championships, Hinchliffe clocked a wind-aided 10.23 to place fourth at the Texas Relays earlier this season. The first-year sprinter from Sheffield, England, followed up with his first collegiate win in the 100m to begin his week at the Mt SAC Relays, finishing the collegiate final in 10.33. That same weekend in Walnut, Calif., he claimed the 100-meter WSU freshman record with a time of 10.22 in the Mt SAC Relays Invitational Elite, placing 10th overall while competing against some of the top sprinters from around the globe.
After returning to Mt SAC for this year's conference meet, Hinchliffe was a time qualifier into the first Pac-12 Championships 100-meter final of his career where he finished sixth overall.
Hinchliffe made the move to the Palouse in January and burst onto the scene, stealing the freshman record in the 60m dash in his second-career indoor meet to place second at the WSU Open (2/2-4) from The Podium in Spokane, Wash. He improved on that mark several weeks later and moved into a tie for second all-time with a lifetime best 6.60 to finish second at the Ken Shannon Invitational (2/24-25) from the Dempsey Indoor in Seattle, Wash.
Prior to WSU, Hinchliffe captured his first British national title at last summer's 2022 England Senior Athletics Championships, winning the event with a then-lifetime-best 10.19 in his semifinal race and a 10.32 in the ensuing finals race. Hinchliffe also went on to place fifth overall in the men's senior 200m at last year's England national championships.
Qualifiers for Saturday's 100-meter final round will be based on the top two finishes from each of the three semifinal heats as well as the next three best times. The men's 100-meter dash national final will be contested on Friday night beginning at 6:52 p.m. (PST).
