PULLMAN, Wash. (May 16, 2023) – Three Washington State Baseball student-athletes were named to the Academic All-District Team by the College Sports Communicators Tuesday.
Senior designated hitter Jacob McKeon, redshirt-junior pitcher Chase Grillo and sophomore infielder Elijah Hainline each earned the honor, matching the 1972 team for the most Academic All-District selections in program history.
McKeon earns Academic All-District honors for the second straight season after earning CSC Academic All-America second-team honors and Pac-12 Academic Honor Roll accolades last season. The Phoenix, Ariz. native was also recently named one of WSU Top Ten graduating seniors, given by Washington State University who has recognized ten of the top seniors in each graduating class. Two weeks ago, McKeon graduated with his degree in kinesiology and a 3.95 GPA. McKeon enters the week hitting .337 with 18 doubles, one triple, six home runs, 44 RBI, 49 runs scored and six stolen bases.
Grillo earns his first career academic honor after posting a 3.74 grade point average while graduating with a bachelor's degree in social sciences. The Kennewick, Wash. native enters the weekend with 23 appearances, six saves and 29 strikeouts in 18 innings and was named to the NCBWA Midseason Stopper of the Year Watch List.
Hainline picks up his first career academic accolade after producing a 3.80 GPA while majoring in kinesiology. The Spokane, Wash. native has enjoyed a breakout sophomore season, hitting .318 with 11 doubles, 10 home runs, 36 RBI and 10 stolen bases including a walkoff home run to beat Santa Clara and the go-ahead RBI-double in the series-opening win over Washington.
The 2023 Academic All‐District® Baseball Teams, selected by College Sports Communicators, recognize the nation's top student‐ athletes for their combined performances on the diamond and in the classroom.
To be nominated, a student-athlete must be a starter or important reserve with at least a 3.50 cumulative grade point average (on a 4.0 scale) at his/her current institution. The cumulative grade-point average may NOT be rounded up to 3.50.
No student-athlete is eligible until he/she has completed one full calendar year at his/her current institution and is at least a sophomore academically and athletically.
The CSC Academic All‐America® program separately recognizes baseball honorees in four divisions — NCAA Division I, NCAA Division II, NCAA Division III and NAIA. Academic All‐District® honorees advance to the CSC Academic All‐America® ballot. First‐, second and third‐team Academic All‐ America® honorees will be announced June 7. The CSC Academic All‐District® teams include the student‐athletes listed on the following pages.
