PORTLAND, Ore. - The Washington State women's soccer program travels to Portland to face National Women's Soccer League's reigning champions, Portland Thorns FC, in a closed-door scrimmage, Sunday, March 5. The Cougars kickoff their spring scrimmage schedule in Portland, facing former Cougar standout Morgan Weaver and the 2022 NWSL Champions.
Weaver, an All-American at WSU, helped lead the Cougars on their historic run to the 2019 College Cup. She finished her college career with over 85 matches played, second all-time in goals scored (43), points (98), and first overall in postseason goals (6) and shots (363).
The WSU program, which has placed a Coug in each of the last four NWSL Drafts, has become a prominent feature in NWSL, with a Cougar taken in the top-10 each of the last three Drafts. In 2020, Morgan Weaver was selected No. 2 overall by the Portland Thorns, followed by Trinity Rodman in 2021 as the second overall pick to the Washington Spirit. Last year, Elyse Bennett was selected No. 7 to Kansas City Current, and most recently, Mykiaa Minniss continued the streak with her selection to the Kansas City Current.
The NWSL season begins March 25, 2023.
