Lawyer sets freshman record, Cougs wrap up day one at New Mexico Team Open

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – Freshman Mason Lawyer sets another freshman record while the Cougars as a team set five personal best marks Friday at the Albuquerquee Convention Center.  Washington State men's and women's indoor track and field teams opened competition at elevation from the N.M. Team Open with the first leg of the two-day meet. 

Freshman sprinter Mason Lawyer, who lowered the program's freshman 60m record (6.75) earlier this season, shattered another freshman record, this time in 200m.  Lawyer clocked a time of 21.19 to place sixth in the men's 200m Friday and will be back in action tomorrow in the 60m dash. Lawyer lowered Anthony Buchanan's previous record time (21.40) that was set back in 2001.
 

Lucas Tailin had a solid day in the office with a personal best mark of 4.97m in the pole vault to place fifth. Taino Ferdinand also finished fifth in the men's long jump with a season-best mark of 2.01m.

 

The freshman from Johannesburg, South Africa, Jada Van Staden, made her Cougar debut in the 200m dash, clocking a time of 25.40 in the womoen's unseeded heat. Elise Unruh-Thomas followed up later with a 24.43 to place eighth in the full women's 200m field. 

 

Washington State's two indoor track programs wrap up the UNM Team Open and the UW Invitational with day two of each meet on Saturday while four additional student-athletes get set to compete at the one-day Inland NW Invitational at the Podium in Spokane, Wash. 

 

The full Cougar track teams return to the Podium next week to host the WSU Invitational on Thurs., Feb. 2nd, though Sat., Feb. 4th, in Spokane, Wash.
