Washington State tied the all-time program record with 14 aces as a team in a sweep over Fairleigh Dickinson.
FAIRFIELD, Conn. - Washington State volleyball (8-1) matched an all-time program record with 14 service aces including a team-high four from Laura Jansen as the Cougars swept a third-straight opponent at the Fairfield Invitational in a 3-0 (25-9, 25-15, 25-15) win over Fairleigh Dickinson (3-6) on Saturday at the Fairfield RecPlex.
Washington State's 14 aces tied a three-set program record that was set back in 1992 against Rhode Island.
Jasmine Martin (9) and Katy Ryan (8) each had career-high block assist totals as the Cougars finished just two shy of a season-high with 13 blocks as a team and held FDU to -.151 hitting. The Cougs finished with a .918 serving percentage and had four different student-athletes tally multiple aces while watching FDU commit eight service errors and 24 attack errors.
Magda Jehlarova finished with a team-leading .583 hitting percentage and a team-high eight kills while Argentina Ung tallied 20 assists on top of six digs defensively. Libero Karly Basham had a pair of aces and five digs in the match.
WSU dominated play from the first serve with an 8-1 run to begin the match, aided by Basham's two first-set aces. WSU went 7-of-10 on sideouts in the opening set and after winning back its serve to go ahead 19-9, Mackensi Melusky served out the set, helping the Cougs win the final seven points in a 25-9 start to the match.
Fairleigh Dickinson suffered from 13 attack errors and a trio of service errors in the second set as the Cougs held FDU to -.320 in a 25-15 second frame to go ahead, 2-0.
Fairleigh Dickinson grabbed its first lead of the entire match early in the third before the Cougs snatched momentum back with a 5-0 run to go up, 8-5. The Cougars later went on a 4-0 run to go up, 22-14 and closed out their sixth-straight win behind the serve of Magda Jehlarova in a 25-15 third set.
WSU will be back on the road next weekend as it travels to the midwest to play No. 24Â Pepperdine and third-ranked Minnesota at the Minnesota Diet Coke Classic on Fri.-Sat., Sept. 16-17, at the Matturi Pavilion.
