BERKELEY, Calif. – The No. 21 Washington State women's soccer team (8-2-2, 2-1-1) lost to the California Golden Bears, 2-1, Thursday afternoon at Edwards Field in Berkeley, Calif. The loss was the Cougars' first of conference play and first since Aug. 18. Senior Brianna McReynolds scored WSU's goal in the 89th minute, spoiling Cal's shutout.

The Golden Bears went up early; in the 11th minute, the Bears broke free down the right side. UC's Ayo Oke sent a dangerous through ball in to Cal's Keely Roy who split the WSU backline and finished from the top of the box for the early lead.

Just before the half, Roy would double the Cal lead from the penalty spot. The official pointed to the spot in the 38th minute after Ayo Oke was taken down at the top of the box, and Roy stepped up to convert the penalty and give Cal a 2-0 halftime lead.

The Cougs would get the goal they were hunting with just 80 seconds left to play. Freshman Lily Boyden pressed down the right touchline, playing a cross in that found the head of a running Brianna McReynolds. The senior forward met the ball at the 6-yard box and powered it down the middle of the net.

The loss snapped a 10-match unbeaten streak for the Cougars, dating back to Aug. 18 and a season-opening loss at then-No. 17 Michigan. WSU was held to a season low 13 shots, while Cal put up 13 shots, the most of any Cougar opponent through 12 matches.

Washington State looks to bounce back this Sunday in a top-25 matchup at Stanford. The Cardinal host the Cougs at noon at Maloney Field with coverage on the Pac-12 Network.
