Academic Services Announces January Student-Athletes of the Month

Washington State men's basketball's Isaac Bonton and track and field's Emily Coombs have been named the Academic Services Student-Athletes of the Month for January 2021.

PULLMAN, Wash. – Washington State men's basketball's Isaac Bonton and track and field's Emily Coombs have been named the Academic Services Student-Athletes of the Month for January 2021.

In his second year at WSU, Bonton has proven a leader both on and off the court as he works towards completing his degree in social science. After transferring to WSU last year, Bonton immediately went to work bettering his community as he has been a member of Student-Athlete Advisory Committee and Black Student-Athlete Association, Additionally, Bonton has spent time volunteering at Pullman schools along with his teammate. When not playing himself, Bonton has coached a local youth AAU team, the Pullman Titans. On the court, Bonton has been one of the best scorers in the country averaging 18.0 points per game, third-best in the Pac-12.

A senior pole vaulter, Coombs has posted a 3.99 GPA in pursuit of her degree in Elementary Education with an endorsement in Middle Level Mathematics as she looks to become a teacher.  She recently completed her student teaching at Garfield Elementary while completing her edTPA, a content specific; performance based national assessment for teacher candidates' readiness to teach. In addition to her work in the classroom, she has participated in Coug Pals multiple times and Butch's Bash. Last year, Coombs competed in multiple meets throughout the 2020 indoor season, most notably taking first place overall at the UW Last Chance College Elite in the pole vault, clearing a height of 12-feet 10 1/4 inches (3.92m). She was named to the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation 2020 Indoor Track & Field All-Academic Scholar-Athlete team, and to the Pac-12 Spring Academic Honor Roll.
