MANHATTAN, KAN. – One of the most prolific shooters in NCAA women's basketball history will be enshrined by her alma mater this fall, as Laurie Koehn, current associate head coach for the Washington State women's basketball team, will be inducted into the Kansas State University Athletics Hall of Fame on September 4.
Koehn will be one of 11 new inductees into the KSU Athletic Hall of Fame, as announced by the university on Wednesday, June 17. The Newton, Kansas native suited up for her home-state Wildcats from 2001-05. The sharpshooter still holds Big-12 Conference records for the most 3-point field goals made in a career (392) and career free throw percentage (87.7%). Koehn's career 3-point total was an NCAA record for nearly a decade, and still ranks at No. 10 on the NCAA's women's basketball all-time 3-point field goals made list. Koehn also sits at No. 5 on Kansas State's all-time scoring list with 1,733 career points.
"I am honored and quite frankly, shocked to be selected for the Kansas State Athletics Hall of Fame," said Koehn. "It is difficult to fully express my gratitude toward K-State Athletics, and more specifically the women's basketball program, for giving me the opportunity to put on a Wildcat uniform for four years and learn to play and compete for something so much bigger than myself."
Named the ESPN.com Rookie of the Year as a freshman, Koehn helped Kansas State to a 26-8 season and a Sweet 16 appearance in 2002. As a sophomore, she was a part of a school-record 29-5 campaign in 2003 before claiming the program's first-ever Big 12 Championship in 2004. Koehn was named All-Big 12 three times during her career and was a two-time Academic All-American. At K-State, Koehn played under a pair of current members of the Washington State women's basketball staff members, as WSU head coach Kamie Ethridge was an assistant at K-State at the time, while current WSU director of player personal Deb Patterson was the head coach of the Wildcats.
"I am forever indebted to my coaches, teammates, fans, and Kansas State University for providing me with the best student-athlete experience one could ask for," Koehn expressed. "K-State Athletics has an unbelievably rich tradition across the board and across all sport. To be recognized for this award is truly humbling."
Koehn signed a free agent contract with the Washington Mystics for the 2005 season and went on to enjoy an eight-year professional basketball career both in the WNBA and overseas. Among Koehn's career international playing highlights was a gold medal as a member of Team USA's U18 team in July of 2000 at the FIBA Americas Championship and a silver medal as a member of Team USA again in 2003 at the Pan American Games. Koehn was inducted into the Kansas Sports Hall of Fame in 2018.
