LAS VEGAS – The No. 11-seeded Washington State women's basketball team ran into a hot-shooting Oregon State squad in the first round of the 2020 Pac-12 Conference Tournament, as the No. 6-seeded Beavers ends the Cougars season in Las Vegas, as WSU fell, 82-55, on Thursday night at the Mandalay Bay Events Center.
The Cougars fell victim to an Oregon State squad that opened the contest shooting an even 50% (10-of-20) from the floor over the first 10 minutes of play and never let up, as the Beavers lead the Cougars by as many 25 points during the first two quarters of play.
Washington State got trio of double-digit scoring performances in the first round matchup, as redshirt senior Borislava Hristova led the charge with 19 points, while fellow senior Chanelle Molina and sophomore Ula Motuga each tallied 10 points apiece.
WSU hit 10 3-point field goals in the loss to Oregon State, as the Cougs shot an even 50% (10-of-20) from behind the arc against the Beavers. The hot-shooting from distance did not translate inside the arc, as Washington State concluded the contest with a 36.4% shooting percentage from the floor, while Oregon State capped off the night with a 48.3% success rate from the field.
Hristova leaves a legacy that won't be long forgotten, as the Varna, Bulgaria native ends her career as the all-time leading scorer at Washington State with 2,269 career points. No basketball player in WSU history on either the men's or women's side has scored more points than Hristova, as she finishes her career at No. 11 on the Pac-12 women's basketball all-time scoring list.
As for Molina, she concludes her Cougar career as the only player in WSU women's basketball history to collect 1,000 points, 400 rebounds and 400 assists. The Kailua Kona, Hawai'i native ends her career on the Palouse with 1,365 career points, 444 career rebounds and 429 career assists.
The Cougs opened the game with a pair of 3-point field goals from Hristova and Motuga to take a brief 6-5 lead, as both teams were tied at 10-all entering the first media break. Oregon State would go on a 19-2 run out of the media timeout to close out the first quarter to take a 29-12 lead over Washington State.
The Beavers scored the first four points of the second stanza to extend their run over the Cougars to 23-2, but Washington State was able to stop the bleeding at the 8:07 mark of the second, as they went on an 8-0 run, aided by a pair of 3-pointers from freshman Grace Sarver. Oregon State hit eight consecutive field goals late in the second quarter, as they took a 53-28 lead over the Cougs going into the break.
Oregon State maintained a 20-plus-point lead over Washington State during the night's final two frames, as the Beavers led by as many as 34 points before taking the 27-point victory to advance to the quarterfinals of the 2020 Pac-12 Tournament, where they will take on No. 3 seed Stanford.
Washington State concludes year two under head coach Kamie Ethridge with an 11-20 overall record, as the 11 victories during the 2019-20 season marks a two-win improvement over from year one under Ethridge's direction.
COUG QUOTES
Head Coach Kamie Ethridge on Tonight's Result: "Well, I would just, you know, obviously say congratulations to Oregon State. What a great performance by their entire team. I thought Scott just had them right on point, and any time a team puts up 52 or -3 points in a half on you, you know you're going to have problems. We just didn't have an answer for their ability to make every shot that they kind of made, and what they did miss, the nine or so, 15 or so in the first half, they got most of those offensive rebounds. It. Was -- we had a bad about 15-minute spurt there where they just ran away from us. And, you know, we couldn't keep up in the scoring column. Really proud of these two players and what they have meant for our program, and, you know, it is always a really hard time to end the season with a loss."
