PULLMAN, Wash. – The Washington State University women's basketball team exploded for 28 points in the fourth quarter on Friday, Feb. 7, to mount one of the largest comebacks in program history, as they erased a 15-point second-half deficit to score a 69-59 win over Colorado in Beasley Coliseum.
The 15-point comeback win is tied for the third-largest comeback in program history. Washington State also rallied from 15 points down against Oregon back on March 5, 2010 to score a 67-53 win over the Ducks. Â The win improves the Cougs record to 11-12 overall on the year, while it also keeps WSU in a three-way tie for seventh in the Pac-12 Conference standings at 4-7.
Washington State got a pair of extraordinary performances from seniors Chanelle Molina and Borislava Hristova in the second half, as the highest scoring pair of teammates in the Pac-12 Conference combined to score 36 of WSU's 44 points over the final two frames.
Molina scored 23 of her game-high 27 points in the third and fourth quarters. The point guard shot a blistering 85.7% over the final 20 minutes, as she only missed one of her seven field goal attempts in the half. The senior connected on both of her shot attempts from behind the arc during that stretch, while she also went a perfect 9-of-9 from the free throw line in the third and fourth.
Molina also made history of her own on Friday night, as she became the first player in Washington State women's basketball history to collect over 1,000 points, 400 rebounds and 400 assists in their career.
Hristova also elevated her game during the final 20 minutes of play, as she scored 13 of her 17 points on Friday in the third and fourth. Tonight's 17-point performance moves her into 17th on the Pac-12 all-time scoring list, as she now has 2,130 career points.
The comeback road began in the third quarter, as the Cougars were trailing the Buffaloes, 40-25, after CU's made the first bucket of the stanza. From that point, WSU went on a 16-6 run to close out the frame trailing by only five points at 46-41.
Molina rolled off 11-straight points for the Cougs between the third and fourth quarters to pull WSU within a bucket at 49-46 with 7:53 left in the game. Washington State eventually pulled even with Colorado at 49-all, after Borislava Hristova converted an old-fashioned 3-point play that came off a steal in the backcourt with 7:45 remaining.
The two squads exchanged baskets over the next four minutes of play, but Molina once again stepped up to the challenge, as she rolled off five-consecutive points to give WSU a 58-54 lead after a 3-point field goal with 2:13 remaining in the contest. Hristova gave the Cougars some breathing room with back-to-back 3-pointers to push Washington State's lead to seven points with 47 ticks left on the game clock.
The Cougars went 5-of-6 from the charity stripe down the stretch to thwart any hopes of a Colorado comeback. WSU shot a blistering 60% (9-of-15) from the field in the fourth quarter, which helped the Cougs overcome a sluggish performance in the first and second quarters. Overall on Friday, WSU shot 41.4% from the field in the victory, and connected on eight 3-point field goals, while hitting 13 of their 14 shot attempts from the free throw line.
Redshirt junior Jovana Subasic rounded out a trio of double-digit scorers for the Cougars on Friday, as she rolled off 13 points in her second career start.
WSU is back in action on Sunday, when they play host to Utah. The Utes are one of the two teams tied with WSU for seventh in the Pac-12 standings, as they collected a win at Washington on Friday to match the Cougar's 4-7 league record. Tip-off from Beasley Coliseum is set for 12 p.m. and will be broadcasted live on the Pac-12 Network Washington.
COUG QUOTES
Head Coach Kamie Ethridge on Tonight's Win: "I'm just so happy for this team. I think its kind of a statement game for us. We hadn't really won a game like this, being down by 15 points, and comeback, and play so well in the second half. We finally found a way to bust Colorado's zone a little bit, after it stymied us in the first half. I just love the attitude and love the determination and toughness that we showed tonight. It's a really good feeling, and I'm happy for our players to have some success."
