Cougs Go Cold Late Against USC on Friday

LOS ANGELES – The Washington State University women's basketball team struggled to find any offensive rhythm on Friday night against the University of Southern California, as a fridge shooting performance in the fourth quarter by the Cougars allowed the Trojans to runaway with a 74-63 victory.

WSU trailed USC by just two points at 53-51 with 8:57 left to play in the game after a Borislava Hristova 3-point field goal, but that would be as close as the Cougs would get to the Trojans on Friday. Southern Cal went on a 17-4 run over the next six minutes to take commanding 70-55. That lead would be insurmountable for the Cougars, as USC handed them the 11-point loss to snap Washington State's two-game winning streak on the road.

The loss drops WSU to under .500 for the first time this season at 9-10, as they have now dropped three-straight Pac-12 Conference games to fall to 2-5 in league play. For USC, the victory improves them to 10-8 on the year, while they have pulled even in the conference standings with the Cougars at 2-5.

Washington State had three players reach double figures on Friday, with redshirt junior Jovana Subasic collecting a team-high 13 points off the bench. Subasic's performance helped the Cougs to a 25-2 edge in bench points. Seniors Chanelle Molina and Borislava Hristova recorded 11 points and 10 points respectively to round out the trio of double-digit scorers for WSU.

USC, who entered the game shooting a Pac-12 low 27.0% from behind the arc, drilled four of their first six 3-point field goal attempts to jump out to an early 14-9 advantage. The Trojans maintained that lead for the majority of the contest, as they lead for 37:34 of game time on Friday. WSU was able to knot it up at 39-all early in the third quarter, thanks to an 11-4 run to start the frame. 3-point shooting got the Cougs back into the game, as sophomore Shir Levy hit back-to-back trifectas during the run, while Subasic capped it off with a 3-pointer of her own to tie it up at 39-39 heading into the third quarter media break.

Southern Cal responded to Washington State's third-quarter run with six-straight points out of the media timeout to go back up 45-39. The Trojans held a three-point lead going into the night's final frame, where they went 7-of-11 from the field in the fourth to hold off the Cougs.

USC was able to pull down 13 offensive boards, which helped them to an 18-4 advantage in second-chance points. In total, USC outrebounded Washington State, 44-30, on Friday night.

WSU returns to action this Sunday, as they travel across Los Angeles to take on No. 10 UCLA. Tip-off from Pauley Pavilion is set for 12 p.m. PT on the Pac-12 Network Los Angeles.

COUG QUOTES
Coach Kamie Ethridge on Tonight's Result:
"I'm disappointed that we couldn't get our offense going tonight. We couldn't guard them in any way, and they proved to be a little bit of a tougher matchup than I thought. Their post players are so wide and it caused trouble for us. We over-helped in the early part of the game that led to them hitting six 3-pointers in the first quarter. They ran a good high-low game, and if we took Ula out of the game, they just destroyed whoever was guarding them in the post. It was just a hard matchup for us, and again I'm really disappointed in our offensive execution tonight."

COUG NOTES
- The loss at USC on Friday denies Washington State it's first three-game winning streak in the Pac-12 since the 2013-14 season. The Cougs had previous won at Cal (Jan 5; 96-75) and at Washington (Jan. 11; 65-56).

- Senior Chanelle Molina moved into a tie with her former high school teammate Lia Galdeira (2012-15) for third on Washington State's all-time 3-point field goals made list with 160 made 3-pointers.

- Chanelle Molina's eight assists tonight ties her season-high in helpers, which she has hit in three previous games this season.

- Senior Borislava Hristova's 10-point outing extends her double-digit streak to 13-straight games. That mark is the sixth-longest double-digit scoring streak by a senior in Washington State history.

- Tonight marks the second time this season that redshirt junior Jovana Subasic has led the Cougs in scoring. She previously achieved the feat back on Dec. 15 with a 19-point performance against UC Irvine.
