Mackenzie Duarte Earns Her 11th Win of the Season Over Utah

PULLMAN, Wash. - The Washington State swim team fell to the University of Utah Saturday at Gibb Pool, 167-93.

The 200 medley relay team from Utah broke the Gibb Pool record with a 1:41.46 in the event.

Leading the way for the Cougars with 16 individual points, including three individual top-three finishes was sophomore Mackenzie Duarte. The Walnut Creek, Calif. native won the 200 breast, nearly breaking the Gibb Pool record with a 2:15.39. Duarte finished second in the 100 breast and third in the 400 IM, while also being a member of the third place 200 medley relay team. Alongside teammates Taylor McCoy, Kelly Morgan, and Paige Gardner, the team clocked a 1:47.24, one second faster than fourth place from Utah.

The Cougars honored their lone senior, Linnea Lindberg at the meet. Lindberg, a Stockholm, Sweden native, swam the breaststroke leg of the 200 medley relay team that placed second. Alongside teammates Lauren Burckel, Sophia Balmaceda, and Chloe Larson, the team clocked the fourth-fastest time this season in the event, touching the wall in 1:46.04. Lindberg also placed third in the 100 breast and fifth in the 200 breast.

Freshman Keiana Fountaine placed second in two individual events - 100 and 200 free. The Tracy, Calif. native also swam the opening leg of the second place 400 free relay team. Alongside teammates Emily Barrier, Sophia Balmaceda, and Chloe Larson, the team clocked the third-fastest time this season, touching the wall in 3:31.87.

Junior Ryan Falk and sophomores Chloe Larson and Taylor McCoy each had a second place finish in their respective events. Falk clocked a 5:08.23 in the 500 free, and also placed third in the 1000 free. Larson placed second in the 50 free, while McCoy took second in the 200 back.

The Cougars will take a week to prepare for the Pac-12 Championships held in Federal Way, Wash. Feb. 27 - Mar. 2.
