SEATTLE – In the 29th edition of the Boeing Apple Cup Series a 90 minute battle came down to one mistake as Washington State (12-6-1, 5-5-1) dropped a 1-0 heartbreaker on the road at Washington (11-6-2, 7-4-0) Friday night. With the game scoreless and the final 10 minutes counting down on the scoreboard the Cougs would commit the fatal error as a game riddled with fouls saw one called in the box in the 82' awarding the Huskies a critical penalty kick. While UW's Summer Yates would convert the game-winner from the spot, the Cougs nearly staved off defeat when super senior Ella Dederick got a touch on the penalty but could not keep it from hitting the back of the net.
The penalty hurt doubly for the Cougs as it came moments after extended offensive possession for WSU that started with the Cougs earning four-straight corners. In addition to the corners the Cougs would see their best chance of the night cleared off the line after freshman Bridget Rieken headed one of the four corners to the near post only to see it headed away at the last moment. In all the Cougs has their chances to put the game away throughout the 90 minutes as WSU dominated the stat sheet with a 17-11 shot advantage while picking up 13 corners to the Huskies 3.

The Cougs suffered just their fourth loss in one-goal games on the year ending the regular season 7-4 in such contests.

Things You Need To Know

Washington State ended the regular season 12-6-1 overall and 5-5-1 in conference play, finishing sixth in the standings.
The loss was the first for the Cougs in the Boeing Apple Cup series since 2003 while seeing their overall record against the Huskies drop to 14-8-7 all-time.
The Cougs fell to 10-3-1 on the year in games in which they outshot their opponent as WSU dominated the stat-sheet.
The 13 corners were a season-high for the Cougs.
The defensive save against WSU was the sixth of the season.
