Academic Services Announces November Student-Athletes of the Month

Volleyball's Jocelyn Urias and Football's Brandon Arconado were selected as the November Student-Athlete's of the Month.

PULLMAN, Wash. – Washington State football's Brandon Arconado and volleyball's Jocelyn Urias have been named the Academic Services Student- Athletes of the month for November 2019.

A graduate student working on his MBA after earning his degree in business administration last year, Arconado has been a constant both on and off the field for the Cougars' football team. The fifth-year Coug has excelled in the classroom earning CoSIDA Academic All-District First Team honors this season and is a two-time Academic All-Pac-12 honoree. He has used his time off the field to give back having been a PAC counselor while also volunteering for the Special Olympics as well as at schools around Pullman to read to and play with young Coug fans. On the field, Arconado played his way into a scholarship after walking on the team in 2016. A favorite target of Anthony Gordon this season, Arconado was named to the Biletnikoff Watchlist for the top receiver in the country. He leads the team in receptions and yards per game while ranking in the top-15 nationally in both categories despite missing two of the Cougars' nine games due to injury. 

A senior from Tijuana, Mexico, Urias has been a constant force on the court during one of the most successful times in WSU volleyball history. Not a native speaker, Urias came to WSU knowing very little English and proceeded to quickly overcame her language barrier to excel both on the court and in the classroom. Due to her hard work and dedication, the fifth-year senior will graduate later this year with her degree in Digital Technology with an eye towards digital design work. On the court, Urias has stood out among her peers as she was named an AVCA All-American last season. A force at the net, Urias has played her way into the program's all-time top-10 in total blocks, block assists, and blocks per set. Outside of WSU, Urias is a member of the Mexican National Team and will look to continue her career as a professional when her time at WSU ends. 

Each month Washington State Academic Services will honor a male and female student-athlete that demonstrates commitment to academics while participating in their sport.
