Chiam Posts Top 15 Finish at Mountaineer Invitational

BRIDGEPORT, W.V. – Senior Nicklaus Chiam posted his first top 15 finish in over two years to lead Washington State during the final day of play at the 2019 Health Plan Mountaineer Invitational Tuesday, played at the par-72, 7,308-yard Pete Dye Golf Club.
 
Chiam's final round of +3, 75, gave him a three-round score of +5, 221, tying for 14th overall in the field. Chiam's last top 15 finish came Sept. 13, 2017 when he finished tied for 8th at the Itani Quality Homes Collegiate at Palouse Ridge Golf Club in Pullman.
 
Tuesday's third round saw WSU fire its best round of the tournament at +15, 303, as it finished the two-day event at 921 (+57), 12th in the 15-team field. No. 25 and host West Virginia won the event with an even-par score of 864, three strokes ahead of runner-up Florida Atlantic.
 
Chiam was one of three Cougars to post identical scores of +3, 75, during the day's final round. Senior Daniel Kolar matched that as he finished the tournament at +10, 226, tying for 27th. Freshman Tianyu Wu equaled Chiam's final two rounds as he went 76-75 and finished the three-round event at +18, 234. Wu's final 18 included three birdies and placed him in a tie for 51st.
 
Senior Scott Redelsperger improved by two shots each round, finishing his final 18 with a +6, 78 to complete the tournament at +24, 240, tied for 75th. Junior Ryan Maine also shot his best round of the tournament Tuesday, ending with a +6, 78, as he finished 80th at +34, 250.
 
Freshman Christian Yanagi, playing as an individual, tied with Wu at +18, 234, after playing his final round at +5, 77.
 
The Cougars are next in action Oct. 14-15 at the Oregon State Invitational in Corvallis, Ore.
