BURNABY, British Columbia – The Washington State University women's rowing team placed five pairs in the final 250-meter sprint at the Burnaby Lake Small Boat Invitational Saturday, which featured junior Emma Gribbon and sophomore Gabby Hannen claiming the title of Regatta Champions by winning the sprint.
"The Cougs raced hard today," said head coach Jane LaRiviere. "I was pleased with how we performed, but there is lots of speed to be gained and we will get back to work Monday."
WSU had six pairs compete in the women's coxless pairs 4,000-meter race and two individuals race in the women's single sculls. Following each race, the top six moved on to the regatta's final 250-meter sprints.
Five cougar pairs finished in the top six in the pairs race. Senior Rosalina Torcivia and junior Jessica Norris finished second with a time of 16:14.696 on the 4,000-meter course. Four other Cougar pairs finished in the top six in the time trial to advance to the sprint. Freshman Caitlin Donaldson and junior Kateryna Maistrenko finished third (16:37.385), junior Emma Gribbon and sophomore Gabby Hannen finished fourth (16:37.433), sophomore Samantha Schmidt and freshman Maddy Pollard finished fifth (16.54.656) and senior Kamila Ondrackova and senior Isabella Cristelli finished sixth (17:02.345).
The Cougars had two other pairs in the 4,000-meter pairs race. Junior Emma Barrett and senior Sue Yu finished eighth (17:06.815), and senior Nora Hefte and senior Madeleine Bingham finished 12th (17:32.459). Gribbon and Hannen went on to take first in the sprint and won the title of Regatta Champions.
Washington State had four entries in the women's single sculls. Senior Renee Kemp had the highest finish for the Cougars at fifth within the Senior category with a time of 17:57.692. and went on to finish second in the single scull sprint. She was followed by freshman Laurita Nemeraviciute with a time of 18:53.522. who finished 10th as well. British Columbia's Katie Clark won the time trial with a time of 16.50.846
Washington State returns to the water for another fall competition with its larger crews and coxswains, Saturday, Oct. 19 at the Head of the Spokane, hosted by Gonzaga.
