PULLMAN, Wash. - The Washington State swim team fell to No. 25 Arizona State Saturday at the Mona Plummer Aquatic Center in Tempe, Ariz., 174-85.
Sophomore Mackenzie Duarte took first place in the 200 breast, edging out Marlies Ross from ASU by just three tenths of a second. Duarte's win the event is her sixth individual win of the season, and her fifth in the 200 breast. The Walnut Creek, Calif. native also took second in the 100 breast.
"Mackenzie had a really strong swim in the 200 breast, winning the event," said head coach Matt Leach. "She went 2:15, it was a great swim and a great improvement on yesterday. We're doing a great job of learning how to swim great programs back-to-back, and that takes time."
Freshman Keiana Fountaine finished in the top-five in three events, marking her 27th top-five finish this season. The Tracy, Calif. native finished second in the 50 and 100 free, and fourth in the 200 free.
Junior Ryan Falk took a top-five position in two events. Falk clocked in at 1:52.26 in the 200 free for second, and finished in fourth in the 500 free.
"This weekend was the last back-to-back dual meet that we'll see for the rest of season," said Leach. "We have Oregon State coming up, and then Utah shortly after before we prepare for the Pac-12 Championship. We're in the final stages of continuing to learn and grow for the conference. Overall, I thought we had a good attitude and some strong effort. We just have to continue to work on doing the little things the right way between intense dual meets like this. We're really looking forward to Oregon State, and hope to see a bunch of Cougs in Corvallis. Go Cougs!"
The team will compete in Corvallis, Ore. Friday, Feb. 1 at 5 p.m.
