PULLMAN, Wash. – Washington State matched a season-high with 18 hits and loaded the bases in the ninth but Utah held on for a 12-11 win at Bailey-Brayton Field Saturday afternoon.

Washington State (16-33-1, 8-21-1 Pac-12) received five hits and three RBI from
Andres Alvarez and four hits from
Justin Harrer. Senior
Blake Clanton closed his career with three hits and two RBI along with a 15-game on-base streak.

Utah (16-39, 8-22 Pac-12) used a four-run first inning and broke a 9-9 tied with a three-run homer in the eighth.

In the first inning, Utah used four hits including a two-run homer to push four runs across in the opening frame.

In the second inning,
Robert Teel drew a one-out walk and senior
Derek Chapman singled back up the middle. One batter later, Alvarez drove a 3-2 pitch deep to right centerfield for a two-out two-run double, cutting the Utah lead to 4-2.

Utah made it 5-2 with a double and single in the fourth inning and added two more runs in the fifth inning after a hit-by-pitch, walk and pair of singles to make it 7-2.

In the bottom of the fifth, the Cougars pushed a run across after an RBI-double from
Justin Harrer. Washington State was at it again in the sixth, using five singles including three infield base hits to plate three runs and cut the Utah lead to 7-6 after Harrer beat out an infield single to third base.

In the seventh, Utah took a 9-6 lead after a solo homer and a sacrifice fly. The Cougars came right back in the bottom of the inning as
Robert Teel and
Ryan Ramsower each drew walks before Alvarez singled back up the middle to score Teel and cut the Utah lead to 9-7. Plew was hit by a pitch to load the bases and Rudkin delivered an RBI-sacrifice fly to right field and Clanton followed with an infield single to third that allowed Alvarez to score and tied the game at nine.

In the eighth, Utah took a 12-9 lead with a three-run homer but the Cougars came back with a pair of runs in the bottom of the inning after a passes ball and RBI-groundout from
Derek Chapman that cut the Ute lead to 12-11.

In the ninth, WSU loaded the bases after an Alvarez single to right field, Plew was hit by a pitch and Clanton was intentionally walked with one out. Utah closer Trenton Stoltz buckled down and ended the game with a 4-6-1 double play.
