In Case You Missed It
PULLMAN, Wash. – For the first time in the Kamie Ethridge era the Washington State women's basketball team (1-2) handed their new head coach a victory as the Cougars persevered through two overtimes to down Nebraska (1-2), 87-84, at home at Beasley Coliseum. The win came from the old guard at WSU as the Cougar vets dominated the night scoring 82 of the 87 points, including 31 from star forward
Borislava Hristova, to hold off a game Husker squad that pushed WSU to the brink late. After seeing their comfortable fourth quarter lead evaporate in front of their eyes, the Cougar upper-classmen found the grit that led them through a tough offseason to find a way to win a game that seemed as if it had slipped through their fingers. Down four with just over one minute to play in the first overtime, the Cougars got the rebounds and the points they needed to survive from center
Maria Kostourkova as the senior shook-off a tough shooting night with an off-balance jumper with just :13 seconds to play that tied the game at 78-78. In the second overtime, Hristova took over once again, scoring six of her 31 to push the Cougars over the top and past a veteran and NCAA Tournament experienced Nebraska team.
Prior to the epic overtimes, the Cougars were in control of the game throughout much of the night, building a lead of 11-points heading into the fourth quarter. Despite the advantage, WSU was forced to fight for its win as the Huskers came out on fire in the fourth hitting their first seven shots to go on a 15-3 run that knotted the game at 68-68 with just under four minutes to play. The fourth was a complete reversal of the rest of the game in which the Cougars used a handful of their own runs to create separation with the Huskers. In the third, a barrage of three-pointers by
Alexys Swedlund, who scored 11 of her 12 in the frame, and
Chanelle Molina, who hit a career-best five in the contest, pushed the Cougars' lead to as much as 13 points.Â
