Cougars Notch Multiple Top-20 Finishes at Chick-Fil-A Invite

FRESNO, CALIF. - The Washington State swimming team sits in fourth place with 233 points after day one of the Chick-Fil-A Invite hosted by Fresno State. The Cougars saw 16 top-20 finishes, including four top-5 finishes.

Senior Jasmine Margetts notched a second place finish in the 400 IM. The Torrance, Calif. native touched the wall in 4:21.59, just hundredths of a second ahead of the third place finisher from San Diego State. Margetts also saw a fourth place finish in the 800 free relay and 500 free. Alongside teammates Keiana Fountaine, Emily Barrier, and Ryan Falk, the team touched the wall in 7:34.91, less than a second behind California. Margett clocked a 4:59.75 in the 500 free for fourth place.

Freshman Keiana Fountaine continued her success in the pool. The Tracy, Calif. native notched a third place finish in the 200 free with a time of 1:50.87. Alongside teammate Chloe Larson, Payton Bokowy, and Emily Barrier, Fountaine also saw a seventh place finish in the 200 free relay, touching the wall in 1:37.44. Fountaine also finished 20th in the 50 free with a time of 24.35.

Sophomore Taylor McCoy ended the day with top-20 finishes in the 400 IM, 200 IM, and 100 back. The Pullman, Wash. native clocked in at 4:29.48 in the 400 IM for tenth place. McCoy touched the wall in 2:07.85 in the 200 IM for 11th place and 59.05 in the 100 back for 18th.

"Looking at the scores, we are trying to focus on the right race and working on the correct fundamentals" said Leach. "All-in-all, we couldn't be happier with where we are at. We still have more learning and growing to do, but it's been a great first day for us and we are looking forward to tomorrow. Go Cougs!"

The Cougars will dive back into the pool Saturday, Oct. 6 for the second day of the Chick-Fil-A Invite. Competition is set to begin at 11 a.m.
