Cougars Set to Race at Burnaby Lake

WSU will seven pairs and four singles to compete at Burnaby Lake.

WSU ROWING TO COMPETE AT THE BURNABY LAKE SMALL BOAT INVITATIONAL: The Washington State University women's rowing team will travel to Burnaby, British Columbia, to participate in the Burnaby Lake Small Boat Invitational, Saturday, Oct. 6…the regatta will commence at 9 a.m.

THE 2018 BURNABY LAKE SMALL BOAT INVITATIONAL: Seven pairs and four singles from WSU will compete in the four-kilometer race, open to all classes of rowers…Washington State will face crews from the University of British Columbia and the Univeresity of Fraser Valley in the women's senior coxless pair event...the singles will race against University of British Columbia...the singles will compete at 9 a.m. while the pairs will race at 1 p.m. ...an awards ceremony will follow the completion of the final race.

EIGHTH ANNUAL BURNABY LAKE SMALL BOAT INVITATIONAL: The eighth annual Burnaby Lake Small Boat Invitational, hosted by the Burnaby Lake Rowing Club, will take place on Burnaby Lake at Burnaby, British Columbia...it is a time-trial competition, in which teams will race the clock…the four-kilometer head race features one 180-degree turn…the top six fastest finishers, men and women, in each boat class will vie for the title of Regatta Champion in a 250-meter sprint, which takes place in front of the rowing club's old grandstands.

WSU HEAD COACH JANE LARIVIERE ON HOW THE TEAM WILL COMPETE AT BURNABY LAKE INVITATIONAL: "There's going to be really stiff competition, UBC will be there and they're great, I think we've got a chance to do well but we'll just let the racing decide it."

COACH LARIVIERE ON FALL TRAINING: "Everybody has been working really hard, I'm pleased with our progress. The top group has been exclusively in small boats and I think the quality of the rowing that I'm seeing is improving on a weekly basis."

PREVIOUSLY AT BURNABY LAKE: Washington State's Emily Thomson and Ivy Elling Quaintance took fourth place in the four kilometer race, while Kristel Tohu and Paige Danielson took fifth at the 2017 Burnaby Lake Small Boat Invitational...Emily Morrow and Lucie Weissova took sixth but did not advance due to sickness...instead Kamila Ondrackova and Linnea Davison who took seventh place advanced to the final sprint...WSU's Thomson and Elling Quaintance took first place in the 250 meter sprint final, while pairs Ondrackova and Davison took fourth and Tohu and Danielson took sixth.

COACHING STAFF: Jane LaRiviere begins her 17th year as head coach of the WSU women's rowing program...as a team, the Cougars have raced in 12 NCAA Championships under LaRiviere...she is joined by associate head coach Karl Huhta, assistant/novice coach Brandon Campbell, assistant coach Dave Kempsell, coordinator of operations Amy VanBuskirk, and graduate assistant Olivia Hecimovich... Huhta is in his fifth year with the Cougars, and second year as associate head coach…Campbell is entering his fourth year… Kempsell comes in for his second year, his first as an assistant coach with the Cougars after serving as the graduate assistant last year.

NEXT UP FOR THE COUGARS: Washington State will return to the water for fall competition with its larger crews and coxswains, Saturday, Oct. 13 at the Head of the Spokane, hosted by Gonzaga.
