PULLMAN, Wash. – Washington State men's cross country's Chandler Teigen and volleyball's Claire Martin have been named the Academic Services Student-Athletes of the Month for October 2018.

A senior on the men's cross country and track and field teams, Teigen (Anatone, Wash.), is majoring in bioengineering, carrying a 3.91 grade point average with plans to attend medical school. A two-time cross country team captain, Teigen is a four-time Pac-12 First Team All-Academic honoree and two-time USTFCCCA Division I All-Academic team honoree and was named to the Google Cloud CoSIDA Academic All-American third team in 2018. On the cross country course, Teigen finished in the top-10 at the last two Pac-12 Championships, placing ninth at the 2017 Championships and seventh at the 2018 meet. He's also competed at the NCAA Championships in both cross country (2017) and track and field (2018).

A senior middle blocker on the volleyball team, Martin (Bremerton, Wash.) is defying gender boundaries as she's majoring in mechanical engineering, whereas just 14 percent of the nation's mechanical engineering majors are female. A two-time Pac-12 All-Academic honoree, Martin holds a 3.22 GPA. She holds the school record for block assists and has been named the Pac-12 Defensive Player of the Week twice in her career; for the week of Aug. 27-Sept. 2, 2018 and for the week of Sept. 19-25, 2016.  Last season, Martin helped lead the Cougars to the second round of the 2017 NCAA Tournament.

Each month Washington State Academic Services will honor a male and female student-athlete that demonstrates commitment to academics while participating in their sport.
