Ula Motuga With Team Australia At The Asian Championships
October 27, 2018 | Women's Basketball
The first-year Coug will represent her country in the U-18 championship tournament.
Before suiting up for Washington State women's basketball, first-year Cougar Ula Motuga will put on her home country's uniform as the Australia native is in Bengaluru, India to play in the 2018 U-18 Asian Championships. The Australians, known as the Gems, will attempt to qualify for the 2019 U-19 World Cup in Bangkok, Thailand while taking on the best-of-the-best from the region. The week long tournament in India will take place from October 28 - November 3.Â
Motuga earned her spot with the Gems after spending the summer months, winter in Australia, playing in a pair of training camps at Australia's Centre of Excellence. She was named to the 18-woman team on August 14 after arriving in Pullman to join the Cougars. At WSU, Motuga is looking to have an immediate impact, however the start of her career will have to wait as she will miss the Cougars' exhibition game on Oct. 29 and the regular season opener on Nov. 6.
Australia has a chance to qualify for the 2019 U-19 World Cup with a top-four finish in India. The Australians finished sixth in the World Cup in 2018. The Gems qualified for the Under-18 Asian Championships by winning gold at the Under-17 Oceania Championships last year in Guam.
All games for the tournament will be live-streamed on the Basketball Australia Facebook page or via FIBA's YouTube channel.
