WASHINGTON STATE ROWING TRAVELS TO PORTLAND:Â
Fresh off of a strong showing at the Head of the Spokane regatta, the Washington State University varsity women's rowing team will head to Portland, Sunday, Oct. 28 to compete in the Portland Fall Classic held on the Willamette River.
THE 2018 PORTLAND FALL CLASSIC:
Racing begins Sunday at the 12th Portland Fall Classic…the Cougars will face their first Pac-12 opponent of the 2018-19 season as Oregon State is entered in the Portland Fall Classic as well...other collegiate teams include Gonzaga, University of Portland, Portland State, and Willamette University...the Portland Fall Classic is a 5-kilometer course on the Willamette River in downtown Portland... the race is open to juniors, masters, open, championship. Racing will begin at 8:30 a.m., weather permitting.
LAST TIME AT THE PORTLAND FALL CLASSIC:
The last time the Cougars competed at the Portland Fall Classic was the fall of 2013... in the first women's race of the day, Washington State's varsity eight took first and out-stroked University of Portland and Seattle University on the five-kilometer course... the varsity eight posted a time of 17:02.54...Portland finished in 17:41.30 and Seattle finished in 19:32.15... the Cougars continued their wining trend in the junior varsity eight final. WSU launched two boats. The second varsity eight took the win with a time of 17:27.48... the Cougars finished ahead of Pac-12 competitor Oregon State (17:55.45)...Washington State's third varsity eight took third in the race (18:16.05)... in the varsity four final, WSU's varsity four out-stroked nine boats for the win...the Cougars finished in 19:54.68... Oregon State took second and was nearly one minute behind WSU... the second varsity four squared off against Oregon State in the junior varsity four final to conclude the morning... the Cougars finished in 20:30.71 followed by Oregon State (21:21.19).
WSU HEAD COACH JANE LARIVIERE ON THE PORTLAND FALL CLASSIC:
"It's going to be new for everybody on our team... We're going to race Oregon State which will be fun and we're just looking forward to it. I think for the coxswains especially, there's quite a bit of flow on the Willamette River and so that's going to be kind of new exciting. Hopefully we'll keep our heads."
COUGARS' LAST OUTING:Â
Last weekend WSU's women's rowing team had a strong showing at the Head of the Spokane against Gonzaga...the Cougars raced two varsity eights, two novice eights, two varsity fours, and three pairs...Washington State's varsity eight finished the 5-kilometer head race with a time of 17 minutes and 40 seconds (17:40)…the second varsity eight notched a time of 18:53… the second novice eight completed the course in a time of 21:02, while the Cougars' first novice eight clocked a time of 21:11, placing first and second respectively ahead of Gonzaga's first and second novice eight…Washington State's first varsity four and second varsity four took first and third in their class (women's fours) and finished in times of 18:31 and 19:32 respectively…Washington State also raced three pairs, the first of which finished their race in a time of 20:20 to secure second place…the second pair clocked a time of 20:37 followed by the third pair with a time of 20:40 to earn fourth and fifth place.

Jane LaRiviere is in her 17th year as head coach of the WSU women's rowing program...as a team, the Cougars have raced in 12 NCAA Championships under LaRiviere... she is joined by associate head coach

Dave Kempsell, coordinator of operations Amy Vanbuskirk, and graduate assistant
Olivia Hecimovich... Huhta is in his fifth year with the Cougars, and second year as associate head coach... Campbell is entering his fourth year.... Kempsell comes in for his second year, his first as an assistant coach with the Cougars after serving as the graduate assistant last year.
