MATCHUP NOTES
The Cougs take on No. 24 Cal Sunday playing in Berkeley for the first time since 2015. Last season, the two teams met just once, in Pullman, with the Cougs pulling off an 84-79 win over the Bears. In the win, the Cougs put five in double-figures led by
Alexys Swedlund with 18 points while WSU's front court combined for 48 points. All-time, the Bears hold the advantage 43-23 including a 27-5 record in Berkeley. The last time the Cougs won in the Bay came on Feb. 12, 2011 as WSU grabbed the 68-66 decision. The win was the second of a season sweep for WSU over Cal.e.
LAST TIME OUT
A slow opening 20 minutes proved to be too much for the Cougars (8-9, 1-4) to overcome on the road at Stanford (10-7, 4-1) Friday night as the Cardinal held off a late charge by Washington State to win 70-57 at Maples Pavilion. From the outset the Cougs put themselves in a hole as the Cardinal jumped out to a 10-0 lead just minutes into the game as Stanford's superior rebounding paid immediate dividends. The early run was one of a handful of big runs by the Cardinal in the first half as Stanford pushed their lead to 30 by halftime as the Cougs' never could get their offense rolling. Despite the half-time deficit, the Cougs continued to battle the bigger Cardinal as WSU began to attack the basket while seeing their shots begin to fall. Over the final 20 minutes of play, WSU outscored the Cardinal 40-25 thanks to
Chanelle Molina,
Borislava Hristova, and
Caila Hailey combining for 30 of the Cougs' final 40 points. Unfortunately for the Cougars, time would run out needing another 10 minutes to complete the comeback.
