PULLMAN, Wash. – Fans heading to Martin Stadium for the 2018 football season need to be aware of some changes to stadium policy as well as allotting plenty of time to make their trek.
"Many of the changes being enacted are in line with national best practices and will enhance safety and provide a better gameday experience for our fans," said WSU Director of Athletics Pat Chun.
With the intent of providing a safer, fan-friendlier environment, Washington State Athletics will implement a new clear bag policy for fans entering Martin Stadium, beginning with the September 8, 2018 opener against San Jose State.
Under the new policy moving forward, fans will be permitted to carry the following sizes and styles of bags into Martin Stadium:
• Bags that are clear plastic, vinyl or PVC that do not exceed 14" x 8" x 14";
• Clear drawstring bags that do not exceed 14" x 14"
• One-gallon clear plastic freezer bags (Ziploc bag or similar);
• Small clutch bags, with or without a handle strap, that do not exceed 4.5" x 6.5"(the approximate size of a hand);
• Exceptions will be made for medically necessary items after proper inspection upon entrance.
Prohibited items no longer allowed in venues include, but are not limited to, purses larger than a clutch bag, coolers, briefcases, backpacks, fanny packs, cinch bags, luggage of any kind, computer/camera bags, binocular cases or any bag larger than the permissible size.
Fans will still be allowed to bring in personal items such as keys, cell phones, wallet, makeup, to name a few, in their pockets if they choose not to use a clear bag. Additional items such as diapers, wipes and other supplies for babies and small children, should be placed in an approved clear bag.
The first 10,000 fans at Martin Stadium for the Cougars' game against San Jose State, Sept. 8, will receive approved WSU clear bags sponsored by BECU. Season ticket holders are guaranteed one bag per account.
Also new this season is the Premium Seating Area and the third floor of the Cougar Football Complex will now open 2.5 hours prior to kickoff as opposed to three hours in past seasons.
Fans traveling to Pullman for Cougar football games should plan to leave more time when traveling from the west side of the state. Beginning in late August, and lasting approximately six weeks, the Washington State Department of Transportation is scheduled to begin work on repairing a deteriorating bridge west of US 395 on State Route 26. SR 26 is a primary route from western Washington to Washington State University in Pullman.
The construction will impact traffic heading to Cougars football games this fall. Suggested alternative route include the following:

- Eastbound traffic at Othello will turn south on SR 17 to SR 260, then east to Connell, then north on US 395 back to SR 26. Westbound traffic from Washtucna would follow the same route in reverse – US 395 south to Connell, west on SR 260 to SR 17 and north to SR 26 at Othello. The detour adds 14 miles to the trip.
- Eastbound traffic staying on I-90 to just beyond Ritzville and turning south on SR 261 to SR 26. Westbound traffic on SR 26 from Pullman would turn north at Washtucna onto SR 261 to I-90.
