PULLMAN, Wash. - Taking advantage of their time off over the summer, the Cougar women have been tearing up golf courses in preparation for the 2018-19 season. From the Palouse to Austria, the Cougars have continued to rise to new heights.
Rising-junior Marie Lund-Hansen capped off a week in Frohnleiten, Austria where she led her home country of Denmark to a third-place finish at the European Ladies' Championships. She came out firing early, posting rounds of 73 and 69 to help Denmark finish fourth in the initial team stages. In the head to head matchups, Lund-Hansen was even better, winning five of her six individual showdowns including her final match as she helped to seal the team's win over Italy to grab the bronze medal. The entire tournament was played at Golf Club Murhof which last held the Ladies' Championship in 2011.
Last season, Lund-Hansen finished her sophomore season with a 74.10 scoring average, the seventh-best individual scoring season in program history. In addition she etched her name in the Cougars' record book as she put together the best tournament score to par in program history, finishing at eight-under with a combined 208 over 54 holes at the Ron Moore Intercollegiate.
Closer to home, a trio of Cougars took part in the 117th Women's Amateur Championship hosted by the Pacific Northwest Golf Association (PNGA) at Palouse Ridge. Recent graduate and all-time great Alivia Brown continued her excellence on the course as the Gig Harbor native finished second over the week of action in Pullman, falling on the 35th of 36 holes to Arizona's Gigi Stoll. Stoll recently helped lead the Wildcats to the 2018 National Championship in May. Along with Brown, soon to be sophomore Emily Baumgart and 2018 freshman Kenedee Peters took on the Cougars home course. Baumgart nearly made it an all Cougar finals as she faced Stoll in the semifinals before bowing out of the tournament. Peters made it to the tournaments quarterfinals only to face her future teammate with Baumgart taking the matchup, 3&2, in a close battle.
The new year for the Cougars begins in August with competition beginning in September.
