Cougars travel to Missoula to face opponents Montana and Iowa

The Cougars make their way to Missoula to face Montana with two matches, Friday Jan. 26, at 8 a.m. PT and 2 p.m. PT. Washington State continues play Sunday, Jan. 28 in Missoula against Iowa.

THIS WEEK: The Cougars make their way to Missoula to face Montana with two matches, Friday Jan. 26, at 8 a.m. PT and 2 p.m. PT. Washington State continues play Sunday, Jan. 28 in Missoula against Iowa. All matches will be held at the Robert O. Lindsay Tennis Center. The Cougars enter the weekend with a 2-0 record, Iowa with a 2-0 record, and Montana yet to play a dual match.

UP NEXT: The Cougars travel home to Pullman, Washington to face Purdue, Feb. 3 at 12 p.m. PT. Last season the Cougars fell against Purdue 1-6 on Jan. 27, 2017 in Lafayette, Indiana. This time the match will take place at the Cougars home court at the Simmelink Courts.

LAST WEEK: The Cougars swept their first dual matches of the season against Idaho with a 7-0 victory Saturday, Jan. 20. They continued the day strong with a second 7-0 sweep against Montana State. Michael Bayerlova's win over No. 39 Marianna Petrei from Idaho is the highest-ranked win by a Cougar player since defeating No. 12 Klara Fabikova of California (April 8, 2016). Washington State improved to 31-18 all-time against Idaho and 11-0 all-time under Coach Hart against Montana State.

BAYERLOVA NAMED PAC12 WOMEN'S TENNIS PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Michaela Bayerlova was named Pac12's Women's Tennis Player of the Week on Tuesday, Jan. 23. The Pac12 announcement followed her two straight-set victories against Montana State and Iowa. Her win against Idaho's Marianna Petrei, the nation's 39th-ranked player marked the highest-ranked win by a Cougar player since defeating No. 12 Klara Fabikova of California (April 8, 2016). Bayerlova is the sixth player at WSU under Head Coach Lisa Hart to receive player of the week honors. Michaela missed much of the fall season playing in professional tournaments, capturing the $15,000 ITF Charleston event last October defeating the world's 427th-ranked player, Montserrat Gonzalez, in the final. Bayerlova is ranked No. 3 among freshmen/newcomers in the most recent ITA rankings and is currently ranked No. 629 in the world after achieving a career-best of 583 last July.

FALL SEASON RECAP: The 2017 fall season began with play at the UNLV Fall Invitational. Newcomer Tiffany Mylonas and returning player Melisa Ates captured the flight two doubles title. Michaela Bayerlova captured title at ITF Charleston after defeating No 1 seed Montserrat Gonzalez who entered the competition with a world ranking of 438. At the Beach Fall Tennis Tournament in Long Beach, Calif. both Tiffany Mylonas and Aneta Miksovska captured singles titles, Mylonas at No. 1 and Miksovska at No. 2. Also at the Beach Fall Tennis Tournament duo Melisa Ates and Barbora Michalkova won their consolation doubles match, and Melisa Ates won her consolation match as singles. At the 2018 Weinman Foundation Invitational Washington State captured seven of the nine matches during the final day of play and Cougar freshman Michaela Bayerlova was the winner for the Green Bracket after going undefeated for the duration of the tournament. Following are the records for the Cougars: Melisa Ates (9-4), Michaela Bayerlova (5-0), Barbora Michalkova (10-3), Aneta Miksovska (10-3), Tiffany Mylonas (12-1), Ege Tomey (6-3) and Guzal Yusupova (6-0).

ROSTER BREAKDOWN: For the 2017-18 season the Cougars will have two new players to accompany the five returners. The returning roster consists of senior Barbora Michalkova, junior Aneta Miksovska, and sophomores Melisa Ates and Ege Tomey and Guzal Yusupova. The returning players will be joined by junior Tiffany Mylonas and freshman Michaela Bayerlova.

BAYERLOVA CAPTURES TITLE AT ITF CHARLESTON: Freshman Michaela Bayerlova gained her second career title at the ITF Charleston Tournament on Oct. 1. Seeded No. 5, she defeated No. 1 seed Montserrat Gonzalez in the championship match, 2-6, 6-3, 6-3. Gonzalez entered the tournament with a singles world ranking of 438. With Bayerlova's victory, her world ranking now stands at 629.

COUGARS IN ITA RANKINGS: Bayerlova was ranked No. 3 among freshmen/newcomers in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association's preseason rankings and junior Tiffany Mylonas was ranked No. 90 in the ITA preseason singles poll. Bayerlova is the first Cougar to receive this title since the ranking began in the fall of 2010. Mylonas is WSU's most recent player to be ranked for preseason singles since junior Elizaveta Luzina in 2014.

LAST SEASON IN REVIEW: Guzal Yusupova finished the 2017 spring season with an 18-8 singles record and a team best 5-2 record in Pac-12 play. Aneta Miksovska finished last season with a 19-10 singles record and had back-to-back wins over nationally ranked players from ASU and Arizona. Cougar freshman Michaela Bayerlova had a successful summer and enters the season with a current singles world ranking of 629, and achieved a career best of 583 during the summer.

COACH HART: Lisa Hart is entering her 15th season as the head coach at Washington State. Hart has accumulated 183 wins over her tenure, finishing the last season with a 10-16 record. In 2012, the Cougars went 19-7 as Hart was awarded the Pac-12 Conference Women's Tennis Coach of the Year award.
