PULLMAN, Wash. – Just five games into the 2017 season Washington State's youth movement officially announced its arrival as the freshmen powered the Cougs (3-1-1) to a 5-0 shutout of Georgia Southern (2-3-1) Sunday afternoon at Lower Soccer Field. From start to finish, WSU dominated play as two early goals sent the Eagles reeling before three second half goals put the game away. Scoring in the sixth minute, senior Sofia Anker-Kofoed netted the would be game-winner from the penalty spot after freshman Makamae Gomera-Stevens was taken out chasing down a ball in the box. From there the Cougs' freshmen took over as Sydney Pulver (14'), Jamie Rita (78'), and Sarah Davidson (89') all put their name in the scorebook for the first time in their careers. For good measure, Morgan Weaver (54') got in the fun for the second time on the weekend.

"It was an exciting game over all for the freshmen and the whole team. Sunday soccer is about the whole team, depth and bench. Those players rose up. For three freshmen to get on the scoreboard today was awesome. We knew we had our hands full again today. Friday was such an emotional back and forth win against a very good Nebraska team that we turned around and I challenged tagain today that if we didn't get the result today Friday didn't matter."

The Cougs picked up their fourth shutout of the season and second consecutive. WSU has gone 380:00 minutes at home without having allowed a goal in 2017.
WSU allowed just five shots on the goal, two on target, while taking 15 shots with eight on goal.
The meeting was the first-ever between WSU and Georgia Southern.
Nearly one year to the day the Cougs posted a 5-0 shutout of North Dakota State on Sept. 4, 2016.
Ella Dederick recorded her 11th career shutout, moving her into a tie for fifth all-time in WSU history. Dederick posted back-to-back shutouts for the second-time on the year.
Sofia Anker-Kofoed's PK goal was the second of the season for the Cougs.
Maddy Haro assisted on two of the five goals as she picked up WSU's first multi-assist game since Kaitlyn Johnson assisted on four of the five goals scored against North Dakota State on Sept. 4, 2016.
In addition to three first-time goals, freshmen Brianna Alger and Shanya Dhindsa recorded their first career assists in the contest.
The Cougs take on Cal State Northridge Friday, Sept. 9 at 7 p.m.in their final non-conference home game of the season.
