CHARLESTON, S.C. – Washington State freshman
Michaela Bayerlova captured a straight-set victory in the opening round of the ITF Charleston event at the LTP Tennis Club.

Bayerlova, from Krumbach, Germany, fought early before pulling away against Ingrid Gamarra Martins of Brazil, 7-6, 6-1. In the first-set tiebreaker, Bayerlova trailed 4-0 before winning the final seven points to capture the set. She then cruised to the victory and advanced to Thursday's second round.

Bayerlova is playing her first clay court event since arriving at WSU in August. With a world ranking of 726 entering the tournament and a No. 5 seed this week, Bayerlova will next face the winner of Catherine Leduc of Canada and qualifier Natalie Novotna of the Czech Republic.
