WNIT Final Four Matchup Set For Wednesday At Georgia Tech

The Cougs will take on the Yellow Jackets for the right to play in the WNIT finals.

WASHINGTON STATE (16-19) at GEORGIA TECH (21-14)
7:00 p.m. ET | Wednesday | March 29, 2017 | WNIT Semifinals
Atlanta, Ga. | McCamish Pavilion (8,600)

WSU ADVANCES TO THE WNIT FINAL FOUR
After making the postseason for just the fourth time in the modern NCAA era, the Cougs have proven to be a tough out as WSU has won four in a row, their longest streak of the year, to advance to the semifinals of the WNIT. The wins for the Cougs in the first four rounds marked WSU's first-ever post season victories (in the modern NCAA era). Three times prior the Cougs played in the opening round of the NCAA (1991) and the WNIT (2014, 2015) only to fall short. The WNIT semifinals are set for March 29 while the finals are slated for April 1 on CBS. The Cougars earned the conference's automatic bid into the postseason tournament thanks to their seventh place finish in the standings. With the Pac-12 earning a record seven bids to the Big Dance, the Cougars became the conference's first team out making them the first team into the WNIT. The bid into the WNIT marks the third time in the last four seasons the Cougars advanced to the postseason tournament.
The Cougs are one of just two Pac-12 teams still standing with Stanford earning a spot in the NCAA Final Four. The Cardinal eliminated the Cougs in the Pac-12 tournament before going on to win the championship and earn a No. 2 seed in the postseason.

LAST TIME OUT
Playing in a hostile environment after traveling over halfway across the country, the Washington State women's basketball team punched its ticket to the Women's National Invitational Tournament Final Four with a hard-fought, 74-66, win over Iowa Sunday afternoon. The Cougars (16-19) continued their historic postseason run with their fourth-straight victory, their longest streak of the year. As they have done all postseason, the Cougs were led by their guards as Alexys Swedlund scored a game-high 20 points while the junior duo of Pinelopi Pavlopoulou and Caila Hailey put together double-double performances. For Pavlopoulou, the Athens native finished her day with 13 points to go with a career-best 11 rebounds for her first-career double-double while Hailey added 10 points to go with a career-high 12 rebounds for her second double-double of the season.

WASHINGTON STATE IN THE REGULAR SEASON
The Cougars finished the regular season with a 11-18 overall record, including a 6-12 mark in Pac-12 Conference play earning a tie for 7th after being picked to finish 10th in the preseason. Most recently, WSU split its final regular-season series, falling to Utah, 74-57, Thursday before defeating Colorado, 67-56, Saturday on senior day. The Cougars lost six games this season that were decided by two possessions (six points) or less or in overtime. Washington State defeated one nationally-ranked opponent this season, upsetting #9/7 UCLA, 82-73, on Jan. 6 in the program's biggest upset ever. WSU earned a spot in the WNIT thanks to their 7th place finish in the Pac-12.

ABOUT THE YELLOW JACKETS
The WNIT semifinal contest between the Cougars and the Yellow Jackets will be the first ever meeting between the two sides. Additionally, the two teams have no common opponents from the season. Georgia Tech enters Wednesday's matchup having played all four of its WNIT games in the friendly confines of McCamish Pavilion. They defeated Jacksonville, Central Florida, Middle Tennessee, and Alabama to earn their spot in the semifinals. On the year, three different Yellow Jacket players are averaging double-digits in scoring led by Zaire O'Neil at 12.5 points per game. O'Neil is also second on the team in rebounding at 5.3 boards per contest. However she has a tendency to get into foul trouble having fouled out of nine contests. As a team, the Yellow Jackets score 68.4 points per game while shooting just a hair over 40% from the floor.
