Cougar Swimming Hosts Utah For Final Home Dual Meet

 
THIS WEEK
The Washington State swim team hosts Utah on senior day in the final home dual meet of the season, Saturday, Feb. 11 at Gibb Pool…the meet begins at 11 a.m…last season, WSU defeated Utah in Salt Lake City, Utah, 149-145.
 
SENIOR DAY
The Washington State swimming program and Head Coach Tom Jager will honor eight seniors before the meet on Saturday…Addisynn Bursch, Emma Elhoff, Kendra Griffin, Hailey Johnson, Elise Locke, Jessica Marston, Haley Rose Love and Anna Rosen.
 
LAST TIME IN THE WATER
The Washington State swim team opened 2017 with a convincing 170-87 victory over Oregon State, Friday night at the Osborn Aquatic Center in Corvallis, Ore…the Cougars jumped out to an early lead, taking the top two spots in the 400 medley relay. WSU's team of Hannah Bruggman, Angela Mavrantza, Anna Brolin and Haley Rose Love took first with a time of 3:50.08. The team of Jasmine Margetts, Addisynn Bursch, Elise Locke and Anna Rosen garnered a second place finish with a 3:50.83…Bursch added first-place finishes in the 50 free (24.41), 100 free (51.95) and in the 200 IM (2:03.75). The Spokane, Wash., native contributed 27 points to the Cougars' total…senior Griffin added 18 points to the WSU total, notching two first-place marks. In the 200 fly, Griffin finished first with a time of 2:04.47, just ahead of teammate Luci Brock who touched in 2:07.16. Griffin also secured the top spot in the 500 free, touching the wall in 5:03.06…Washington State also gathered first-place finishes in the 200 fly and 1000 free…junior Rachel Thompson finished the 200 free in 1:53.51, out-touching Locke by two seconds…senior Jessica Marston took home her first win of the season with a 10:40.47 in the 1000 free…Mavrantza, a freshman, notched her team-leading fifth and sixth wins of the season with impressive performances in the 100 breast (1:04.61) and the 200 breast (2:20.11)…Margetts clocked the fastest time of the 200 back, touching the wall in 2:00.55. In the 100 fly, Locke and Anna Brolin took the top two spots, clocking times of 57.33 and 57.48, respectively…WSU closed out the meet strong with a first-place finish in the 200 free relay from the team of Love, Bruggman, Johnson and Rosen, clocking a time of 1:35.95.
 
COMING UP
WSU returns to the pool to compete in the Pac-12 Championships, Feb.22-25 in Federal Way, Wash., at the Weyerhauser King County Aquatic Center…WSU finished seventh last season at the Pac-12 Championships.
 
COUGAR SWIMMING EARNS CSCAA SCHOLAR ALL-AMERICA HONORS
The Washington State swimming team has been recognized as a College Swimming Coaches Association of America (CSCAA) Scholar All-America Team for exemplary academic performance during the fall 2016 semester...the Cougars earned a 3.43 team GPA last semester to earn the reward, the second-highest in the Pac-12...during the fall semester, 15 student-athletes earned over a 3.00 GPA...additionally, 15 swimmers were named to the WSU Athletics All-Academic Team for achieving over a 3.00 GPA for the spring and fall 2016 semesters...a record 638 teams, representing 394 institutions, earned the honor...in total, 73 percent of all CSCAA member programs posted GPA's above 3.00, with 91 percent of Division I women's teams meeting the mark...to qualify for the award, a team must have achieved a cumulative team grade point average of 3.00 or higher during the fall 2016 semester.
 
WSU SWIMMING TRAINED IN FLORIDA DURING WINTER BREAK
The Washington State swim team took a break from the cold Pullman weather and traveled south to Delray Beach, Fla., to train for 10 days over winter break...the team started every day with calisthenics on the beach, followed by a pair of two hour training sessions in the pool, with a break in between...the athletes also spent two hours a day in the weight room building strength and embarked on open water ocean swims to increase endurance...the trip marked the fourth-consecutive year the WSU swim team trained in Florida over winter break.

COUGAR SWIMMING INKS SEVEN TO NATIONAL LETTERS OF INTENT
Seven incoming student-athletes signed National Letters of Intent to the Washington State swimming team, head coach Tom Jager announced last week…the 2017 signing class is comprised of Taylor McCoy (Pullman, Wash.), Maia Petrides (Honolulu, Hawaii), Chloe Larson (Rapid City, SD), Alba Fores (Lund, Sweden), Sam Howell (Austin, Texas), Kelly Morgan (Edmonds, Wash.) and Emily Cook (Portland, Ore.)…"We are very excited about this recruiting class," Jager said. "They are athletic, fast, smart and each and every one of them is a great person. This class will help us further climb in the Pac-12. I can't wait to coach them and be a part of their success."
 
MAKING HISTORY
Washington State's 143-119 defeat over No. 23 UCLA marked the first win over the Bruins in school history…Saturday was the 11th dual meet against UCLA in program history…the Cougars claimed 10 of the 14 events against the Bruins.
 
FRESHMEN CONTINUE TO IMPRESS
Freshman Angela Mavrantza recorded her team-leading fifth and sixth wins of the season with impressive performances in the 100 breast (1:04.61) and the 200 breast (2:20.11) against Oregon State…at the Ohio State Invite, she finished 14th, with a personal-best 2:15.29, the sixth-fastest time in school history and good for an NCAA B standard time…she notched her fourth win of the season with an impressive performance in the 200 breast, touching the wall in 2:19.81 against the Northern Arizona Lumberjacks…the Athens, Greece, native's pervious three victories came in the 100 Breast against USC, California and UCLA…fellow freshman Ryan Falk continued her impressive freshman campaign at the Ohio State Invite in the 500 free by finishing 36th, with a time of 4:53.60, good for the ninth-fastest time in school history and a personal best time…she then touched the wall 23rd at 17:03.84, the tenth-fastest time in school history in the 1650 free…she contributed 18 points to the Cougars' total against Northern Arizona…the Portland, Ore., native took first place in the 1000 free with a time of 10:20.76, and later added a first place finish in the 500 free touching the wall in 5:00.02...the wins marked Falk's third and fourth victories of the season…her previous two victories came in the 200 free and 500 free against UCLA.

HEAD COACH TOM JAGER TO THE PAC-12 MEN'S ALL-CENTURY TEAM
Washington State University Swimming Head Coach Tom Jager was named to the Pac-12 Men's Swimming Olympic Sports All-Century Team...Jager was inducted for his excellence in freestyle sprints in Pac-12 Swimming at UCLA in 1984-87...he earned five individual NCAA championships and one relay championship...individually, Jager won two NCAA titles in the 100-yard freestyle in the 1983 and 1984, two in the 50-yard freestyle in 1984 and 1985 and one in the 100-yard backstroke in 1985...in 1984, he was named the Pac-10 Swimmer of the Year and later earned two Olympic Gold Medals as a member of relay teams...a panel of 20 coaches, swimmers, administrators and members of the media selected the team consisting of 26 swimmers and six divers, plus a Coach, and Swimmer & Diver of the Century...after college, Jager added two more Olympic Gold medals from relays and a silver medal in the 50-meter freestyle in the 1988 Olympic Games...he closed out his Olympic career in 1992 with a gold medal in the 4x100 freestyle relay and a bronze medal in the 50-meter freestyle.

LAST SEASON
The Cougars finished last year seventh in a tightly contested Pac-12...WSU notched eight dual meet victories last season, including wins over Arizona State, Oregon State, Nebraska and Utah...the Cougars won six-straight dual meets to close out the season for the second-consecutive year...Washington State earned 65 individual wins during the course of the season...WSU broke four school records last season, across four events and recorded 33 WSU top-10 performances.
