LOS ANGELES, Calif. – Closing out the road slate of their 2016-17 season, the Washington State women's basketball team struggled to get its offense clicking against No. 18/16 UCLA Sunday afternoon, falling to the Bruins at Pauley Pavilion. The lack of scoring cost the Cougs (10-17, 5-11 Pac-12) as the Bruins (20-7, 11-5 Pac-12) ran off with a 67-48 win to even the earn a split of the season series against WSU.
With the name of the game being to put the ball in the basket sometimes the ball does not cooperate which proved to be the case for the Cougs for nearly 40 full minutes Sunday afternoon. From the outset, the Cougs could not get anything to drop, falling behind 13-1 before a three by junior Caila Hailey with 5:36 to go in the opening quarter finally hit the bottom of the net. Hailey would go on to finish the game with 10 points as she was the lone Cougar to reach double-figures in the game.
The cushion from the opening minutes of the game would hold for the Bruins into the half despite a quick burst by WSU to start the second quarter. The Cougs would run off a 10-3 start to the new frame to cut the deficit in half and make it just a two possession game early only to slip back into an offensive funk. From there the Bruins never pulled back as the Cougs continued to see their open looks rattle out and the UCLA lead grow to its largest of 26 in the game's final 10 minutes of play.
Overall, the Cougs never truly could find a rhythm on the offensive side of the ball, finishing the game shooting just 29.9 % (20-of-67) from the floor. At the line, the Cougs shot a season-low 23.5% as     WSU hit just four of their 17 freebies.
In total, four different Bruins hit double-figures in the game with Kennedy Burke scoring a game-high 17 to go with three assists and four blocks. Monique Billings came up with a double-double as the Bruin standout scored 12 points while tying a UCLA single-game record with 25 rebounds. Nicole Kornet, in her final regular season game in Pauley Pavilion, matched Billings with 12 points while fellow senior Kari Kover chipped in 10. As a team, the Bruins would shoot just .388 (26-for-67) from the floor while making 10-of-18 from the line.
Outside of Hailey, the Cougs saw a handful of players just fall short of double-figures with redshirt-sophomore Nike McClure finishing the game with seven points, snapping her two-game run of double-digit scoring. McClure, however, did come away with 12Â rebounds for her second double-digit rebounding effort of the year. She would also add three steals and a pair of blocks to bring her season total to 44. The 44 blocks moved the Tenino native into a tie for third all-time in WSU single-season history. Freshman Kayla Washington and senior Ivana Kmetovska scored 17 combined off the bench for the Cougs with Washington chipping in nine points and five rebounds while Kmetovska posted eight points and four rebounds.
The win for the Bruins completed a perfect 14-0 campaign in Pauley Pavilion for the year while running their home winning-streak to 27-straight dating back to early in the 2015-16 season.
The Cougs head home to Beasley Coliseum for the final two contests of the regular season next week beginning with a Thursday night tilt against Utah on the PAC-12 Network. The game is scheduled for a 6:06 p.m. tip on Feb. 23Â in Pullman.
