A run to the Sweet 16 propelled the Cougs' national ranking.
KANSAS CITY, Mo. – After playing its way into the third round of the NCAA Championships, the Washington State women's soccer team earned a national ranking of No. 19 in the United Soccer Coaches (USC) final poll, the organization announced Tuesday.Â
Throughout the year the Cougs flirted with a top-25 ranking, routinely receiving votes in the national poll. The Cougs first picked up votes in the week one poll of the season after a 0-0 draw with No. 19 Minnesota.Â
Seven of WSU's 2017 opponents were ranked in the final top-25 poll including all three NCAA Championship opponents. The Cougs' final opponent of the year, Florida, finished ranked No. 6 after besting WSU, 1-0, in double-overtime in the NCAA Championships Third Round. WSU was one of four Pac-12 teams to finish ranked in the coaches poll alongside of Stanford (1), UCLA (2), and USC (13), while Cal, Arizona, and Colorado all finished receiving votes.
The Cougs' No. 19 ranking is their first ranking inside the top-25 since picking up a No. 23 ranking in the Nov. 10 poll in 2015. WSU finished that season receiving votes in the poll's final rankings. The last time the Cougs finished the season ranked in the top-25 came at the end of the 2002 season when WSU was ranked No. 16 by Soccer America.
Washington State returns the bulk of their 2017 team in 2018 with just four graduating seniors and nine returning starters.
