VICTORIA, British Columbia – Recent Washington State graduate and former rower, Nicole Hare, has been named to the Canadian senior team for World Rowing Cup 3, which will take place July 7-9 at Lucerne, Switzerland, Rowing Canada Aviron (RCA) announced.
World Cup 3 is the first international competition for Canada's senior team this year, and includes a combination of returning Rio 2016 Olympians and athletes making their debut at the World Rowing Cup series. The women's team is coached by Dave Thompson.
Hare will compete in the women's four, along with her crewmate, Hillary Janssens, from last year's women's pair under-23 championship, along with Olympians Christine Roper and Susanne Grainger. Hare competed for Canada in the women's pair at the 2016 Rio Olympic Games.
Hare (Calgary, Alberta) finished her fourth and final season with the Cougars in 2017, having rowed with the varsity eight crew her entire career. She redshirted last season as she took a year off to train for the 2016 Olympic Games with Canada. Every year that Hare has been on the team, the Cougars have advanced to the NCAA Rowing Championships.
As a freshman in 2013, Hare was instrumental in getting WSU back to the NCAA Championships after a one-year drought, as she helped lead the varsity eight and the team to 14th-place finishes. The following season Hare's varsity eight crew finished 15th at the NCAA Championships, while the team placed 14th. The following season, 2015, the then-junior guided WSU to its second-best team finish in school history as the Cougars placed eighth and the varsity eight crew finished ninth. As a redshirt senior in 2017, Hare helped lead the varsity eight crew to a 13th-place finish at the NCAA Championships as WSU placed 14th as a team.
Over 140 athletes participated in this year's selection process, competing in pairs and singles at Speed Order Trials for a spot at the selection camp in Burnaby, BC. Athletes were then invited to the National Team Training Centres (London, ON and Victoria, BC) where selections were confirmed for the 2017 World Cup and Under-23 World Championship National Teams.
