PULLMAN, Wash. -- The Washington State University volleyball program celebrated its outstanding 2016 season as players, coaches, support staff, families and season ticket holders gathered Feb. 11 at the Gray W Legends Lounge.
Head Coach Jen Greeny, Associate Head Coach Burdette Greeny and Assistant Coach Shannon Hunt handed out awards for athletic and academic achievements from the Pac-12 Conference, the American Volleyball Coaches Association, and the NCAA Championship Tournament.
Graduated senior Tani Stephens, was the recipient of the Cougar Volleyball Program's "Our Five" team award for the second consecutive year. The award is given to the player who best personifies the five pillars of Passion, Humility, Unity, Servanthood and Thankfulness. Stephens is now attending graduate school at University of Portland and is a member of the beach volleyball team.
Stephens was joined by fellow seniors Hailey Bethune and Haley MacDonald in giving their farewell speeches. Not able to attend the banquet was senior Kyra Holt who is playing professional volleyball for the Puerto Rican club team, Gigantes de Carolina.
The 2016 Cougar volleyball season was filled with milestones. WSU ended the season ranked No. 24 in the Final AVCA Coaches Poll with a 22-12 overall record: the most wins in a season since 2002, and tied for fifth-best all-time wins in Cougars history. WSU's 11-9 Pac-12 record, tied for fifth place in the highly competitive conference, was the most conference wins for the Cougars since 2002. The Cougars received an at-large bid to the 2016 NCAA Women's Volleyball Championship Tournament for the 11th time in school history and defeated Marquette in the First Round before falling to No. 3 Wisconsin on the Badgers home court in Madison, Wis., in the Second Round.
