Cougars Conclude Play at European Championships

PULLMAN, Wash. – Four Washington State women's basketball players concluded competition at the FIBA U20 European Championships, Sunday. Rising junior Pinelopi Pavlopoulou, rising-sophomores Maria Kostourkova and Borislava Hristova, and incoming freshman Jovana Subasic each competed for their respective countries at the championships held July 9-17.

Pavlopoulou competed for Greece at the Division A championship held in Matosinhos, Portugal. Pavlopoulou, an Athens native, averaged 13.0 points per game, 6.0 rebounds per game, 4.1 assists per game, and 3.3 steals per game. The Hellas finished 14th in the tournament with wins over the Netherlands and Germany. In her game against the Dutch, Pavlopoulou nearly recorded a triple-double with 21 points, 10 assists, and nine rebounds.

Kostourkova and host-country Portugal finished 10th in the tournament with wins over Spain, Bosnia & Herzegovina, and Turkey. Kostourkova averaged 10.3 ppg and 8.3 rebounds per game over the seven-game championship. In Portugal's opening round game against Bosnia & Herzegovina, the Lisbon native scored 30 points and grabbed 14 rebounds.

Subasic and Serbia had the best finish of the three Cougars competing at the Division A championship, taking fourth-place in the 16-team tournament. The incoming freshman averaged 5.6 points per game and 4.9 rebounds per game. Serbia finished with wins over Sweden, Portugal, and France. In a close loss to Italy, Subasic scored 13 points and recorded eight rebounds in 29 minutes of play.

In the Division B championship at Podgorica, Montenegro, Hristova and Bulgaria finished 12th. Over four games, Hristova averaged 12.5 points per game and 5.2 rebounds per game. The All-Pac-12 selection nearly led Bulgaria to a win over Belarus, scoring 23 points with eight rebounds and three steals in 35 minutes of play.

The four Cougar student-athletes will enjoy a short break before returning to Pullman to begin preparations for the 2016-17 school year and season.
