No. 13 Cougar Rowing Sweeps Oregon State

Pullman, Wash. – No. 13 Washington State rowing swept Oregon State in all five races en route to its seventh-consecutive Winchell Cup, and the varsity eight won its second-consecutive Crawford Perpetual Plate, with calm waters, Saturday at Wawawai Landing on the Snake River.
The Cougars and Beavers meet each spring to compete for the Crawford Perpetual Plate and the Winchell Cup. The Crawford Perpetual Plate is named after Washington State's first rowing coach Tammy Crawford, and has been awarded to the winner of the varsity eight race since 2003. The Winchell Cup is named after 11-year novice coach Jodi Winchell, and is awarded to the team with the most points on the day.
The Washington State varsity eight (coxswain- Rebecca Burns, stroke- Emily Thomson, Mihaela-Teodora Berindei, Savannah Davison, Morgan Cathrea, Jess Brougham, Lucie Weissova, Jordan Watson, bow- Kim Coon) continued its string of recent success, earning its second-consecutive Crawford Perpetual Plate after outlasting Oregon State in a tough race. The Cougars pulled away from OSU at the 750-meter mark and maintained a two-seat lead over the competition. The Cougars held off Oregon State's move in the last 500-meters, crossing the finish line in 6:23.17, four seconds ahead of the Beavers who finished with a time of 6:27.87.
The second varsity eight (coxswain- Jenna Mangiagli, stroke- Emily Morrow, Taija Thompson, Jessica Newson, Sarah Steger, Jessi Howe, Lori VerMurlen, Chloe Rogers, bow- Isabella Watt) defeated the Beavers after gaining an open-water lead early in the race. The Cougars finished in 6:32.09, nearly five seconds ahead of the Oregon State which crossed the finish line at 6:37.13.
The Cougar varsity four (coxswain- Ellie Burg, stroke- Codi Swenson, Katrina Tarrant, Kotryna Lasaite, bow- Paige Danielson) continued the dominant racing for WSU. The Cougars gained an open-water boat-length lead at the 1,000-meter mark and did not look back. WSU maintained its lead and crossed the line 12 seconds ahead of the Beavers, with a time of 7:24.78. Oregon State finished the race with a time of 7:36.06.
In the second varsity four heat, the Cougars opened the day with a win. The Cougar second varsity four A boat (coxswain- Kyla Emme, Grace Arnis, Katie Persley, Jill Hannink, bow- Tammy Hilgendorf) held off the competition and crossed the finish line at 7:36.21. Washington State's second varsity four B crew (coxswain- Hannah Welzbacker, Jenna Kennedy, Megan Lee, Colleen Gibbons, bow- Brittany Brooks) made a comeback in the final 500-meters to narrow the WSU A boat's lead. The Cougar B crew finished just one second behind the WSU A crew, with a time of 7:37.06. The Oregon State second varsity four boat finished in 7:42.88, 10 seconds ahead of WSU's second varsity four C (coxswain- Lauren Leahy, Sara Brevick, Miranda Armstrong, Hunter Jones, bow- Kaisha Davis) which completed the race in 7:52.47.
In the final race of the day, the Washington State third varsity eight A (coxswain- Taylor Brown, stroke- Grace Arnis, Katie Persley, Jill Hannink, Megan Lee, Jenna Kennedy, Tammy Hilgendorf, Colleen Gibbons, bow-Brittany Brooks) outraced the field. At one point, the WSU A boat opened a two boat-length lead over the competition, finishing ahead of Oregon State's third varsity eight and WSU's third varsity eight B. WSU third varsity eight A crossed in 6:50.41, followed by the OSU third varsity eight at 7:04.56. The Cougar third varsity eight B (coxswain- Bethany Pupava, stroke- JoAnne Bates, Kaycee Faber, Tori Gerken, Katie Weir, Mahal Johnson, Megan Compton, Sophia Rogers, bow- Sam Eilers). The Cougar third varsity eight B crew raced closely with the OSU third varsity eight boat over the 2,000-meter course, finishing three seconds behind the Beavers, crossing the line at 7:07.47.
The Cougars next travel to Gold River, Calif. Sunday, May 15, to compete at the Pac-12 Championships.
