T&F Coaches Head to IAAF World Indoor Champs

PULLMAN, Wash. -- Angela Whyte, an assistant track and field coach at Washington State University, and Liga Velvere, a volunteer coach at WSU, will compete for Canada and Latvia, respectively, in the IAAF World Indoor Championships, March 17-20, at the Oregon Convention Center in Portland.
Whyte, a native of Edmonton, Alberta, was the top Canadian and fifth overall in the women's 60m hurdles at the 2016 Hershey Indoor Track & Field Canadian Championships at the Claude-Robillard Sport Facility in Montreal last month. A member of Team Canada at the 2004 and 2008 Olympic Games, she ran the 60m hurdles in a time of 8.05 seconds Feb. 27, 2016, in Seattle, and has a lifetime-best time of 7.92.
Whyte is one of 22 athletes from 16 countries racing in the women's 60m hurdles and her 8.05 time is ninth-fastest among the field. The women's 60m hurdles will be contested Friday, March 18, with heats at 10:45 a.m., semifinals at 5:30 p.m., and the final at 8:30 p.m. PT.
Velvere is from Saldus, Latvia, and was a Western Athletic Conference champion while competing in the 800m and 400m hurdles at the University of Idaho. She has a lifetime 800m PR time of 2 minutes, 2.79 seconds, and ran a 2016-best time of 2:03.08, in February at the Portland High Performance Meet. She is the lone Latvian competitor at the World Championships.
Velvere is one of 17 athletes from 14 countries racing in the women's 800m and her 2:03.08 time is 14th-fastest among the field. The women's 800m heats will be held Saturday, March 19 at 11:15 a.m., and the final is set for 1:30 p.m. Sunday, March 20.
