Cougars Cruise Past Colorado with Fast-Paced Offense

Box Score

PULLMAN, Wash. – Five Cougar players scored in double figures as the Washington State women's basketball team (14-14, 5-12 Pac-12) defeated the University of Colorado, 83-70. The Cougars utilized a fast-paced offense to build an early lead which they never relented, scoring 45 points against the Buffaloes (7-21, 2-15) in the opening half. Freshman Borislava Hristova led WSU with 17 points in the contest, as the Cougars finished 29-of-55 (.527) from the floor.

“I'm really proud of our team. We were playing hard and fast,” WSU Head Coach June Daugherty said. “Our depth was a really positive factor for us tonight. This team has never quit. They always come back. They're always hungry to improve, and that's one of the things that is really remarkable about them. I love seeing 20 assists for our team. I think that speaks volumes for how our team played this evening.”

Washington State finished an impressive .556 (10-of-18) from beyond the arc, including six 3-pointers in the second quarter. The Cougars shot over 50 percent for the third time this season and tied a season-high with 20 assists on 29 made field goals. WSU's bench outscored Colorado's 31-8, marking the 23rd time this season the Cougars' reserves have outscored an opponent's.

The Cougars jumped out to an early lead in the contest, building a double-digit lead less than three minutes into the game. Washington State would never look back, as eight players scored in the opening period and WSU built a 24-17 first-quarter lead.

Colorado looked to erase its deficit in the second quarter, scoring six-unanswered points to trail 30-27 with 5:18 to play in the half. After a timeout from Coach Daugherty, WSU senior Dawnyelle Awa buried back-to-back 3-pointers, giving the Cougars a nine-point that they would not relent. WSU led 45-33 at halftime.

WSU freshman Maria Kostourkova scored the Cougars' opening basket out the locker room and WSU cruised through the remaining 18 minutes with a double-digit lead to their second-consecutive win. Kostourkova and sophomore Pinelopi Pavlopoulou led WSU in rebounding with five boards apiece. Pavlopoulou also led the Cougars with a career-high six assists. Fellow sophomore Caila Hailey dished four assists for a new career-best.

Kostourkova, redshirt-freshman Nike McClure, and sophomore Bianca Blanaru each recorded a block in the game, bringing the Cougars season total to 114 blocks, matching the all-time school record set by WSU's 2012-13 team.

The Cougars will conclude their 2015-16 regular season with an 11 a.m. matinee against the University of Utah, Saturday, at Beasley Coliseum. WSU will honor its four seniors, Dawnyelle Awa, Mariah Cooks, Taylor Edmondson, and Alexas Williamson, prior to the start of the game.
