November 04, 2016 | Women's Basketball
PULLMAN, Wash. – Washington State women's basketball student-athletes junior guard Caila Hailey, redshirt sophomore Krystle McKenzie and junior guard Pinelopi Pavlopoulou were voted team captains of the 2016-17 season by their teammates.
Hailey a native of Inglewood, Calif. earned an honorable mention Pac-12 All-Defensive team and is thankful her teammates think she's a leader in the program.
In her leadership role Hailey said, "I want to be as consistent as possible because it's hard being a leader and coming out here and knowing that it's not just about you, it' s about the team. I just want to bring that kind of attitude to the table and be positive at all times on the court."
Gold Coast, Australia native, McKenzie said she is proud that she has the opportunity to lead her teammates in the right direction this season.
"I think I'll be able to lead by example and I think it's important for us to be able to handle adverse situations throughout the season, which is something that I think I can really help the team with. I definitely want to bring a lot of energy to the girls and keep them focused," McKenzie said.
Pavlopoulou, who played in all 30 games last season, said representing the program in any way is a great responsibility and a blessing. The Athens, Greece native said she wants to follow last season's captains in making the team feel like a family.
"In this new role, I want to help the team, especially the freshman," Pavlopoulou said. "I want to help them off the court when dealing with adversity because they're going to face a lot of new things and changes in their lives and I want to be there for them."
