PULLMAN, Wash. –
Alysha Overland and
Kaitlyn Johnson scored first-half goals to lead Washington State to a 2-0 victory over Washington Thursday night in front of 1,131 fans at Lower Soccer Field.
Â
With the win the Cougars finish their season with an 8-9-2 record, 3-7-1 in Pac-12 play. Washington ends its campaign 7-12-1, 2-9-0 in conference action. Additionally, the Cougars extend their unbeaten streak against Washington to 13 seasons, going 9-0-4 in that stretch.
Â
WSU struck first in the 15th minute as
Morgan Weaver sent a long ball up the right side to a streaking Overland, who had snuck behind the defense. It was then a race to the ball between Overland and Washington goalkeeper Kaylyn Smith, who had come way out of the net. Smith tried to clear but the ball rebounded off Overland and the WSU sophomore needed only to send the shot in to the open net for her sixth goal of the season and a 1-0 lead.
Â
In the 39th minute, the Cougar defense cleared the ball into Washington territory where Weaver outraced the Husky defense to gain control. Weaver took one touch to gain space before sending a cross to the top of the box to a wide-open Johnson. The Cougar senior collected the ball and sent it inside the far post for her third goal of the season and a 2-0 lead heading into halftime.
Â
In the second half the Cougars continued to maintain the run of play and the defense line kept things clear for goalkeeper
Ella Dederick. While Washington outshot the Cougars on the night, 16-9, only two of those shots were on frame and both easily handled by Dederick.
Â
Eight Cougar seniors ended their careers in a Washington State uniform,
Kailiana Johnson,
Kaitlyn Johnson, Jazmine Jones,
Nicolle Marlow,
Amy Neal,
Lianna Simms,
Alexis Thode and
Susie White. The group were a part of 46 victories and three NCAA appearances.
