PULLMAN, Wash. – Khan Lee and Ryan Maine have each signed a National Letter of Intent to join the Washington State men's golf team next season, Cougar head coach Dustin White announced Thursday.
"We are excited to add Ryan and Khan in 2017," White said. "They both bring a level of play and work ethic that is expected from day one - as each has experience competing and having success in big events. Both are from the Pacific Northwest region and felt that Washington State was the best place to improve both athletically and academically. They are going to help us build a foundation for the years ahead and to help Cougar golf to a new height."
Maine, a native of Spokane, Wash., is a senior at Freeman High School. Maine won the individual and team title at the 44th Annual Junior America's Cup this past summer after finishing 8-under par. He was the 2016 WJGA's Eastern Open overall champion, shooting 6-under through three rounds. Maine took first at the 2016 1A District 7 tournament after firing a final round 65 and finishing 25 strokes ahead of the runner-up. During his sophomore year, Maine was runner-up at State and tied for second at the 2015 Palouse Ridge Playoff.
"Ryan had a great summer on the golf course and capped it off by winning the Junior America's Cup down in Mexico – one of the premier junior events held each year," White said. "He has a lot of natural ability and will only get better from competing in the Pac-12 conference. Being a two-sport athlete (basketball and golf), he loves competition and will do well in a team atmosphere."
Lee, a native of Langley, B.C., will graduate from Clayton Heights Secondary School this June. Lee took first place at the B.C. Juvenile Championships this year. Over the past four years, Lee was a U.S. Junior qualifier and was named the B.C. Zone 3 Junior champion for two consecutive years. His team won gold at the Western Canada Summer Games and he tied for third at the AJGA/CJGA Junior Championship during his sophomore year. The golfer was captain of his high school team for two years.
"Khan hasn't played as much in the U.S. (being from Canada), but the events he has won and competed in have given him the tools necessary to compete at the collegiate level," White said. "He is dedicated to golf and takes a lot of pride in being at his best to help contribute to the team's success."
The men's golf team returns for the spring season Jan.23-24, at Tucson, Ariz., for the Arizona Intercollegiate.
