Senior Day Ends in 1-1 Draw against Oregon

PULLMAN, Wash. – Amy Neal's goal in the 73rd minute gave Washington State the equalizing goal but 20 minutes of overtime was not able to settle anything as the Cougars played to a 1-1 draw against Oregon Sunday morning in front of a Senior Day crowd of 463 at Lower Soccer Field.

Trailing 1-0 for much of the contest, Neal put the capper on a flurry of shots in front of the Duck goal to bring the Cougars (7-9-2, 2-7-1 Pac-12) even with just over 17 minutes remaining in regulation. The play began when Kailiana Johnson's shot hit the crossbar and rebounded straight to Kaitlyn Johnson, whose shot was saved by Oregon (8-9-2, 2-7-1 Pac-12) goalkeeper Halla Hinriksdottir. Hinriksdottir could not corral the ball and it rebounded straight to Neal, who finished from close range for her first goal of the season.

The Cougars came out fast as off the opening kick, Morgan Weaver's shot 20 seconds into the contest beat the keeper but hit the far post and was cleared away. WSU had two headers inside the box that both went just over the crossbar as did Sofia Anker-Kofoed's blast from outside the box late in the first half.

Oregon's first shot of the game resulted in a goal. Abby Morrow sent a diagonal pass through the Cougar defense to Brianne Parsons outside the box. Parsons then sent a ball to the near post where it found Marissa Everett, who flicked it in front of the goal to Bayley Brunner who finished from close range for the 1-0 lead in the 19th minute. The shot beat WSU goalkeeper Alexis Thode, the fifth-year senior who was making the first start of her career.

In the second half the Cougars turned up the offensive pressure, outshooting Oregon 14-2 in the half, including two shots by Neal that hit the crossbar. The second came when Hinriksdottir misplayed a goal kick that went right to Neal, who took two touches then chipped the ball over the oncoming keeper, only to see it hit the crossbar and go over.

In the two overtime periods it was much the same as the Cougars outshot the Ducks 6-2 in the 20 extra minutes, having good looks but not able to connect on a game-winner.

For the contest the Cougars outshot the Ducks, 25-7, though Oregon had a 5-4 edge in corner kicks.

Prior to the game Washington State soccer recognized its eight-member senior class in a brief ceremony. Seniors Kailiana Johnson, Kaitlyn Johnson, Jazmin Jones, Nicolle Marlow, Neal, Lianna Simms, Thode and Susie White, all of whom started, were warmly welcomed by the Lower Soccer Field fans for their contributions to Cougar Soccer over the years.

Washington State concludes its 2016 season Thursday when it hosts Washington at 7 p.m. at Lower Soccer Field. The match will be televised by the Pac-12 Network.
