WSU Men’s Cross Country Team Ranked 15th Nationally
October 18, 2016 | Cross Country
NEW ORLEANS -- The Washington State University men's cross country team is ranked 15th in the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) national poll for Week Five of the season. This is the highest ranking for the WSU men's team since 1998.
The Cougars men's squad moved up in the national rankings after a stellar ninth-place showing at the Eighth Annual Nuttycombe Wisconsin Invitational Oct. 14 in Madison. The WSU men's team, receiving votes in the previous (Oct. 3/Week Four) USTFCCCA top 30 rankings, had the highest finish by a non-ranked team among a highly-competitive field that had 19 top-ranked teams and another six teams receiving votes.
In the 2016 USTFCCCA Cross Country rankings, WSU had received votes in the Sept. 12 Week One rankings. The Cougar men's team moved up to 27th in Sept. 19 Week Two rankings based on the team victory over then-No. 8 Washington on the Huskies' home course at the Sundodger Invitational Sept. 17. A sluggish showing at the Sept. 30 Joe Piane Notre Dame Invitational dropped WSU out of the top 30 rankings but still receiving votes in Sept. 26/Week Three rankings.
Last year, the Cougars were ranked 25th in the 2015 Week Seven rankings, the first national ranking under then-second-year Head Coach Wayne Phipps. WSU had a superb fourth-place finish at the NCAA West Regionals and received an at-large berth to the NCAA Championships where the Cougar men finished 26th out of 31 teams. WSU returns all seven of the men who competed at the 2015 NCAA Championships.
Historically, WSU's men's cross country team has been ranked as high as 10th in the preseason poll of 1998 when the Cougars placed 18th at the NCAA Championships. More recently, WSU was ranked 20th for two weeks in 2009 and fell to 27th at the end of that season but finished 21st at the NCAA Championships.
In the Oct. 18 USTFCCCA West Region Men's Rankings, WSU is fifth, behind Stanford, Oregon, UCLA, and Portland. The Cougar women are not ranked in current West Region rankings. Complete national and regional lists can be found at www.ustafccca.org.
The WSU men's and women's teams will compete next at the Pac-12 Cross Country Championships, Oct. 28 at the Randolph North Golf Club in Tucson, Ariz.
