Box Score PULLMAN, Wash. – Twelve players on the Washington State women's basketball scored, as the Cougars (11-4, 2-2 Pac-12) defeated the Arizona Wildcats (10-5, 1-2 Pac-12), 67-46, Friday at Beasley Coliseum. The Cougars recorded their second-straight conference win behind strong play from the WSU bench, which outscored Arizona's, 43-16.
WSU senior Mariah Cooks led the Cougars in scoring and rebounds. The Santa Maria, Calif., native scored 15 points, and pulled in a game-high nine rebounds. Cooks was assisted by freshman Borislava Hristova who added 14 points. In total, twelve Cougars scored and all 14 players on the WSU roster entered the game.
The Cougars used stifling defense to limit the Wildcats opportunities. WSU forced Arizona into 24 turnovers, including a season-high 17 steals by the Cougars. Washington State also controlled the glass, outrebounding Arizona 38-34. Washington State pulled in 21 offensive rebounds, compared to 13 for the Wildcats.
“It's a good team victory,” WSU Head Coach June Daugherty said. “This shows our depth, and when we play hard with this kind of talent, good things happen. I think outrebounding them and forcing the turnovers says a lot about this team.”
Washington State started the game strong, holding the Wildcats without a rebound for over four minutes. The Cougars jumped out to a 10-point lead with two minutes and 43 seconds to go in the opening period, before Arizona went on an 11-0 run to regain a lead with eight minutes left in the second quarter. WSU regained the lead less than a minute later and would not consent it again.
Junior Ivana Kmetovska scored six second-quarter points to lead the Cougars, who extended their lead to 33-26 by the end of the half. Returning from the locker room, WSU outscored Arizona 25-12 in the third quarter. The Cougars used strong 3-point shooting to build their lead, shooting 3-of-5 (.600) from beyond the arc in the period. Cooks, who scored 11 second-half points, scored at the third-quarter buzzer to give WSU a 20-point lead.
In the fourth quarter, the Cougars maintained their 20-point lead to secure their first 21-point victory over a conference opponent since defeating Oregon by 28 points during the 2011-12 season. The win is also the largest margin of victory over Arizona since 1998 (87-64).
Washington State returns action Sunday, Jan. 10, against Arizona State. The Cougars will welcome the Sun Devils to Beasley Coliseum for a noon start time with coverage on the Pac-12 Networks.
