PULLMAN - Washington State swim team opened 2016 with their second conference victory this season. WSU defeated Oregon State University 154-100 Friday night at Gibb Pool. The Cougars earned the top time in 12 of 14 events to give WSU its fourth-straight victory over the Beavers.
Last season against OSU, the Cougars also captured 12 events and swept three of them in a 187-75 victory.
WSU jumped out to an early lead taking the top two spots in the 200 medley relay. The team of Jasmine Margetts, Linnea Lindberg, Anna Brolin, and Addisynn Bursch finished first with a time of 1:44.49.
Three Cougars contributed 18 points to the win. Freshman Jasmine Margetts, junior Addisynn Bursch, and senior Presley Wetterstrom all picked up two wins.
Bursch dominated the 100 and 200 free. In the 100 she touched the wall first at 50.96. In the 200 she placed first with a time of 1:50.16, the tenth-best time in WSU history. Bursch also finished with the best time in Gibb Pool history in the 200 IM at 2:02.91, also earning the tenth-fastest time in school history.
Margetts picked up her 18 points in the 100 and 200 back. In the 100, she finished at 55.89, a personal record and the eighth-fastest in WSU history. In the 200 she clocked the best time at 1:59.33, the seventh-fastest time in school history.
Wetterstrom captured the 100 breaststroke (1:04.37) and the 200 breaststroke (2:16.81).
The Cougars swept a total of four events in the meet including the 200 freestyle, 50 freestyle, 100 freestyle, and 200 backstroke.
Junior Haley Rose Love and junior Elise Locke both contributed one win for the Cougars. Love finished first in the 50 freestyle at 23.66. Locke clocked the fastest time in the 200 butterfly, at 2:04.27.
In the 100 butterfly Brolin had the best time of 55.51.
The team closed the day with the best time in the 400 freestyle relay at 3:31.94.
The Cougars return to the pool Friday Jan. 29 and Saturday Jan. 30 for a two-day meet to compete against the University of Nebraska at Gibb Pool in their final home meet of the season. The meet begins at 5 p.m. on Friday and 11 a.m. on Saturday.
