PULLMAN, Wash. – With nearly 10 years of experience as a men's basketball assistant coach, coordinator of basketball operations and director of player development, Tim Marrion returns to Pullman for his third full-time stint with the Washington State men's basketball program as the team's coordinator of operations, head coach Ernie Kent announced Wednesday.
Marrion last served on the WSU men's basketball staff as the team's director of player development under then-head coach Ken Bone, during the 2013-14 season. Prior to that he was the coordinator of operations for Cougar basketball from spring of 2009 until the summer of 2012.
"I'm excited for Tim to join our staff," Kent said. "He brings a wealth of experience in his many capacities working with collegiate men's basketball programs. He's highly respected within the basketball circle and is able to bring a wealth of knowledge from the past positions he's held."
Marrion replaces Mike Simonson, who served as the coordinator of basketball operations since the 2012-13 season, and was a part of the men's basketball program for the last nine years, nine of them as a full-time staff member. Simonson joins the women's basketball coaching staff at Seattle Pacific as an assistant coach.
"We appreciate all that Mike has done for the Washington State men's basketball program, not only in our time here, but the years prior to that," Kent said. "It says a lot to be able go from a coordinator of basketball operations to an assistant coach, and Mike has the basketball IQ and experience to succeed at that level. We wish Mike nothing but the best at Seattle Pacific."
"It has been a privilege and an honor to represent my alma mater over the past five years on the basketball staff at WSU," I can't put into words the amount of pride I've had while serving Washington State University. I want to thank Coach Kent for giving me the foundation needed to advance my coaching career, as his mentorship has been a key part of my coaching growth. Once a Coug, Always a Coug."
Following the 2013-14 season at Washington State, Marrion served the men's basketball associate head coach at Clark College at Vancouver during the 2014-15 season. At Clark College, Marrion helped guide the Penguins to the Northwest Athletic Conference Tournament Championship, where they finished the year with a 25-6 overall record, winning their final 10 games. He assisted head coach, and former WSU men's basketball student-athlete, Alex Kirk, in all areas of the program, including recruiting, player development and game planning. From there he spent a year at Idaho as the director of basketball operations during the 2015-16 season.
"I'm very thankful for the opportunity to return to Washington State," Marrion said. "I am excited to work under the leadership of Coach Kent and eager to help push the program forward however best I can."
As director of player development at WSU during the 2013-14 season, Marrion served as the team's academic liaison and helped with scouting, organizing the program's recruiting data base and practice planning. Between his times at WSU, Marrion served as an assistant men's basketball coach at San Jose State during the 2012-13 season, his second stint with the Spartans. Prior to his year at SJSU, Marrion spent three years at WSU as coordinator of basketball operations in 2011-12 and operations assistant from 2009-11.
Before returning to WSU the first time, Marrion spent the previous three seasons on the men's basketball staff at San Jose State University. During the 2008-09 season at SJSU, Marrion served as the director of basketball operations where he organized travel, ran the booster club, managed the team budget and oversaw all administrative facets of the program.
Marrion originally joined the Spartan basketball program for the 2006-07 season as an administrative assistant and was promoted to an assistant coaching position for the 2007-08 season. At age 22 at the time of his appointment, he was believed to be the youngest full-time assistant in Division I men's basketball. As an assistant coach, Marrion was responsible for coaching the defense and point guards, evaluated and recruited potential student-athletes and scouted opponents.
Prior to joining the SJSU staff, Marrion spent three seasons at WSU as a student assistant where his duties included the preparation of scouting reports, video coordination, film exchange and coordinating team meals. He has worked as a guest coach at summer youth basketball camps in Northern California, Kentucky and Washington.
Marrion received his bachelor's degree in sport management with a minor in leadership studies from Washington State in just three years, graduating in 2006. He earned his master's degree in sports leadership from Duquesne University in Pittsburgh, Pa.
