PULLMAN, Wash. – Senior Hailey Bethune's dozen kills led the Washington State volleyball team (6-1) to a 25-16, 25-11, 25-18 sweep over the University of Maryland Eastern Shore (7-3) Friday afternoon at the Cougar Challenge Tournament in Bohler Gym.
Bethune's 12 kills equaled her career-high and she hit an outstanding career-best .688 for the match, committing only one error in 16 attacks. She also led the match with five blocks. McKenna Woodford and Kyra Holt each added eight kills while Taylor Mims and Ella Lajos each had five kills. Lajos and Claire Martin each contributed three blocks. Haley MacDonald and Nicole Rigoni each set up 15 assists and Alexis Dirige led the match with 12 digs.
UMES was led by the 10 kills form Iva Vujosevic (.318) who also led the match with three aces. Ivana Blazevic had 15 assists and Kirstin Fink led the team with five digs. Alana Polk had three blocks.
WSU hit an outstanding season-best .402 for the match and held 214 UMES to a .058 team hitting percentage. The Cougars also led the match in team digs 39 to 23, aces five to three, and blocks by a seven to six margin.
The Cougars trailed in the third set by an early score of 10-5, but out-scored the Hawks 10 to 5 to knot the set up at 15. Led by Bethune and Holt, WSU scored the final 10 points and held the visitors to three additional points. WSU hit .467 for the set while UMES hit .200.
In the opening match of the Cougar Challenge, George Washington (5-3) defeated Idaho (3-4) by set scores of 32-30, 25-19, and 25-21.
In Friday night Cougar Challenge tournament action in Bohler Gym, UMES takes on Idaho at 5 p.m. and WSU meets George Washington at 7:30 p.m.
